Chapter 1 - The Midnight Call to Paris

The shattered porcelain on the Parisian marble floor looked like tiny frozen stars under the warm glow of the hotel chandelier, but Elena didn't look down. Her eyes remained locked on the glowing phone screen, where her parents’ beaming, triumphant faces stared back at her from the JFK First-Class lounge.

“Thanks for making our round-the-world dream trip a reality, sweetie!”

Vance’s voice on the other end of the line was thick with sleep and sudden panic. “Elena, are you serious? The FBI? For a family real estate dispute?”

“This isn't a dispute, Vance,” Elena said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, clinical register that brooked no argument. “They didn't just sell a house. They used a falsified Power of Attorney—fraudulently expanded from a simple car registration form I signed seven months ago—to execute a fraudulent deed transfer while I was out of the country. They liquidated my grandmother’s legacy for half a million dollars in cash, and they are currently sitting in the Emirates lounge waiting to board Flight EK202 to Dubai.”

A pause hung over the transatlantic line, followed by the sound of rustling bedsheets and a drawer opening. Vance was waking up fast.

“If they used a forged notarization to execute an interstate wire transfer across state lines, that crosses into federal jurisdiction,” Vance admitted, his tone shifting from sleepy confusion to sharp legal focus. “Wire fraud, interstate identity theft, and grand larceny. But Elena, freezing accounts takes time. If they board that plane and enter international airspace—or land in a non-extradition country—getting those funds back will take years.”

“They aren't getting on that plane,” Elena said, stepping carefully over the broken espresso cup and walking toward the floor-to-ceiling glass window overlooking the glittering Eiffel Tower. “Zoom in on the departure board behind them in that photo. Gate 4B. Boarding begins in forty minutes. Call Special Agent Miller at the New York field office. Tell him I am authorizing an immediate freeze on all joint social security indices, and tell him the suspects are carrying liquid cash proceeds from an illegal real estate transaction.”

“And if they’ve already wired the money to an offshore shell account?” Vance asked quietly.

“Then we trace every single cent,” Elena replied, her amber eyes reflecting the cold city lights outside. “My grandmother gave me that lakehouse with her dying breath. They traded her final wish for Gucci scarves and a Rolex. I am going to make sure they land in handcuffs before they even finish their champagne.”
