Chapter 2 - Gate 4B Interception

The humming din of the Emirates First-Class lounge at JFK International Airport was filled with the gentle clinking of crystal flutes and the low murmur of wealthy travelers preparing for long-haul luxury.
Arthur and Martha Miller sat in plush leather armchairs near the floor-to-ceiling windows, admiring the gleaming nose of the Boeing 777 parked just outside. Martha adjusted her brand-new Gucci scarf with an air of profound self-satisfaction, while Arthur twirled a glass of vintage champagne, letting the sunlight catch the heavy gold links of his new Rolex.
“Can you believe it, Arthur?” Martha sighed happily, pulling out her phone to scroll through the photo gallery. “The lakehouse was just sitting there rotting. Elena never even used it. We finally got what we deserved after thirty years of suburban mediocrity.”
“Fifty thousand cash in hand, plus the wire transfer clearing just before we left the title office,” Arthur chuckled, raising his glass in a silent toast to his own cleverness. “And Elena is none the wiser. By the time she realizes the deed is gone, we’ll be sipping cocktails in Dubai on our way to the Maldives.”
A chime echoed through the terminal. “Now boarding passengers in First Class, Flight EK202 to Dubai, Gate 4B.”
Beaming, Martha gathered her gleaming Louis Vuitton tote bags, while Arthur stood up, smoothing down his tailored blazer. They strolled leisurely toward the boarding gate, stepping into the priority queue just behind a business traveler in a sharp suit.
The gate agent scanned Martha’s boarding pass. The scanner beeped a sharp, alarming red, accompanied by a soft automated error tone.
The agent frowned, tapping the terminal screen. “Pardon me, ma’am. Let me try that again.”
She scanned the pass a second time. The screen flashed a bright crimson warning: SECURITY HOLD — DO NOT BOARD. CONTACT PORT AUTHORITY.
Martha blinked, her smile faltering slightly. “There must be a mistake. We’re in First Class. Seat 2A and 2B.”
Before the agent could respond, two heavy-set Port Authority officers in dark tactical vests stepped out from the security corridor beside the podium, flanked by a tall man in a plain grey suit holding an open federal badge.
“Arthur and Martha Miller?” the agent in the suit asked, his voice crisp and authoritative.
Arthur’s champagne-induced euphoria vanished in a single heartbeat. He took an involuntary step backward. “Yes? Who are you?”

“Special Agent Miller, FBI Financial Crimes Division,” the man stated, stepping directly into their path. “You are being detained under federal suspicion of wire fraud, interstate identity theft, and the fraudulent conveyance of real property valued in excess of five hundred thousand dollars. Put your bags down and place your hands behind your back.”
