Chapter 9 - The Ice-Bound Road

The SUV’s headlights cut jagged beams through the swirling snow, illuminating the winding, pine-lined ascent toward the lakehouse.

The tires crunched heavily over frozen slush, the vehicle slipping slightly on a sharp turn before the electronic traction control corrected the slide with a mechanical groan. In the passenger seat, a local private investigator named Marcus—hired by Vance before her flight landed—kept his eyes glued to a GPS tablet.

“We’re two miles out from the property line, Elena,” Marcus said, pointing a gloved finger at the glowing screen. “And I’ve got some bad news. My spotter in town just pinged a pair of commercial utility trucks turning down your grandmother’s private lane twenty minutes ago. They aren't local contractors. They’re heavy equipment haulers.”

Elena’s grip tightened on the door handle. “Victor Vance didn't wait for the court injunction. He’s moving in tonight.”

“They’re breaking federal trespass laws if they touch that property before the injunction hearing on Monday,” Marcus noted, shifting his weight. “Do we call the state police?”

“By the time county dispatch answers and sends a cruiser up this mountain in a blizzard, the boathouse will be gutted,” Elena replied coldly. “We keep driving.”

Ten minutes later, the SUV crested the final ridge. Through the veil of falling snow, the dark, sprawling silhouette of the lakehouse came into view.

To Elena's horror, the driveway was already occupied by two large, unmarked flatbed trucks with their hazard lights blinking a dull, pulsing amber against the white snow. Several figures in heavy winter gear were hauling crates and heavy-duty demolition tools down the wooden pathway toward the old boathouse at the edge of the freezing lake.

Elena killed the SUV’s headlights a hundred yards short of the property, coasting the vehicle into the thick tree line.

“Wait here in the truck with the dashcam recording,” Elena instructed Marcus, reaching into her glove compartment and pulling out a heavy steel tire iron.

“Elena, you can’t go down there alone—” Marcus started, but she had already pushed the door open, stepping out into the biting sub-zero wind.
