Chapter 6 - The Sealed Envelope

The sharp ping of the elevator bell echoed softly through the plush Parisian lobby, but Elena didn't step inside.

Standing beside the polished mahogany concierge desk was the night manager, holding out a heavy cream-colored envelope adorned with a deep crimson wax seal bearing an antique family crest—a crest Elena recognized instantly as the personal seal of Julian Vance, her grandmother’s lifelong estate attorney in upstate New York.

“A courier dropped this off ten minutes ago, Madame Miller,” the manager said in polished French-accented English. “He insisted it be placed directly into your hands before you left the hotel.”

Elena stepped back out of the elevator, her heart performing a sudden, erratic stutter against her ribs. She took the envelope, her fingertips grazing the cold, rigid wax. Julian Vance had passed away three years before her grandmother, leaving his firm in the hands of his nephew. Why would a sealed letter from his private archive surface in Paris tonight, of all nights?

She tore the wax seal open with a trembling thumb, pulled out a thick sheet of parchment covered in Julian’s unmistakable slanted handwriting, and began to read under the amber lobby lights:

“Dear Elena, if you are reading this, it means Arthur and Martha have finally crossed the line I spent forty years trying to prevent. Your grandmother knew their greed long before you were born. The lakehouse deed was never the only asset she secured for you. Buried beneath the floorboards of the boathouse lies a second, unrecorded title—one that your parents successfully hid from probate back in 2010. But be warned: that second deed doesn't just grant ownership of the land. It reveals why your parents were so desperate to sell the property before you discovered what was hidden inside the lake itself.”

Elena stared at the final sentence, the blood draining completely from her face.

Before she could process the warning, her phone buzzed violently in her palm. It was Vance, her current attorney, calling her back on an encrypted line.
