Chapter 19 - THE GLOBAL CONSPIRACY

"What do you mean, he's just the regional manager?" I demanded, gripping the data drive tighter as the gravity of his words settled over me.
"Project Janus wasn't conceived in Langley, son," my father said, gesturing for me to walk with him along the pedestrian walkway bordering the lake. We moved at a measured, casual pace, blending seamlessly with the morning commuters and tourists. "It was funded through a decentralized network of private defense conglomerates spanning four continents—shell corporations backed by sovereign wealth funds and ultra-nationalist intelligence syndicates who believe democracy is too fragile to survive the modern digital age."
"They're trying to engineer global political compliance," I realized, piecing together the encrypted data threads we had pulled from the van's server in Virginia.
"Exactly," my father nodded, his eyes scanning the surrounding street corners with the practiced vigilance of a man who had lived behind enemy lines for decades. "Sterling’s arrest in Washington is going to cause a massive power vacuum inside the DIA. But the people pulling his strings are already activating contingency protocols. They don't care about the U.S. Senate or federal grand juries. They're preparing to launch Phase Three."
"Which is?"
"A synchronized, global cyber-kinetic blackout designed to collapse critical infrastructure across North America and Western Europe," my father said, stopping near a quiet park bench overlooking the lake. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a heavy, encrypted micro-drive encased in titanium alloy, pressing it into my palm. "Everything we need to dismantle their financial infrastructure is on this drive. Account numbers, offshore routing nodes, and the identity of the primary architect behind the entire syndicate."
"Who is it?" I asked, looking down at the titanium drive.
Before my father could answer, the sharp, unmistakable whine of a high-frequency communications jammer echoed across the plaza.
BZZZZZT!
My tactical phone instantly went dead, the screen flashing a black error code. Across the street, the digital pedestrian traffic lights flickered, turned solid red, and went dark simultaneously.
"Ambush!" my father hissed, his hand instantly darting inside his trench coat to rack the slide of a compact sidearm.
From behind the stone pillars of the nearby pavilion, three figures dressed in nondescript civilian clothing suddenly emerged, their hands moving with terrifying speed beneath their jackets to draw suppressed automatic weapons.
May you like
"Get down!" my father roared, shoving me hard behind the concrete base of the park monument just as the air above us erupted into a deafening stutter of suppressed gunfire.
Bullets chewed through the stone bench where we had been standing moments before, sending jagged white granite chips spraying across the gravel walkway.
