Chapter 28 - SUNRISE OVER A NEW HORIZONForty-eight hours later, the crisp, salt-tinged air of the Atlantic coastline greeted us as we stood on the windswept cliffs overlooking the rugged shores of Maine.

The national news broadcasts were playing on repeat across every major network—reports of sweeping, unprecedented federal corruption investigations, mass resignations across the Department of Defense, and the sudden, inexplicable collapse of several multi-billion-dollar defense conglomerates under mysterious financial audits.

Arthur Sterling was sitting in a maximum-security federal penitentiary awaiting trial on charges of treason and subversion, his tailored suits replaced by standard orange canvas.

Marshal Vance had been reinstated as the head of federal oversight, spearheading the monumental task of rebuilding an intelligence apparatus free from the shadow of Project Janus.

I stood beside my father at the edge of the cliff, watching the golden rays of the morning sun break across the horizon, painting the crashing ocean waves in brilliant shades of amber and rose.

"You know," my father said quietly, hands buried deep inside his coat pockets as the ocean breeze whipped his white hair around his face, "the world is still a messy place, Nathan. There will always be people who want to build machines to control it."

"Let them try," I replied, resting my hand comfortably against my side, knowing that the tools to fight back were finally in the right hands. "We'll be ready for them."

May you like

My father laughed, clapping a heavy, reassuring hand onto my shoulder before turning to walk back toward the waiting vehicle parked along the winding coastal road.

I stood for a moment longer, breathing in the clean, salt air, watching the endless expanse of the ocean stretch out before me into the bright, unwritten future.
