Chapter 5 - The Unexpected Witness

A tall, impeccably dressed woman in a charcoal pantsuit strode down the center aisle, holding a heavy red file folder stamped with federal seal markings.
Judge Vance banged his gavel. “Order in the courtroom! Who interrupts these proceedings?”
“Apologies, Your Honor,” the woman announced in a crisp, authoritative voice, stopping right beside Maya’s table and flashing a federal badge. “Special Agent Sarah Chen, United States Department of the Treasury, Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. We are executing a federal freeze order on all assets associated with Gabriel Miller and the Sterling-Vance Trust subsidiary.”
A collective gasp echoed through the gallery. Gabriel went completely white, jumping to his feet. “This is an outrage! You can't do this—this is a civil probate matter!”
“It was a civil probate matter until five minutes ago, Mr. Miller,” Agent Chen replied coldly, opening her red folder. “When our cyber-fraud division uncovered that the offshore holding accounts you transferred those funds into are directly linked to an international syndicate currently under federal investigation for wire fraud and illegal asset stripping.”
Gabriel stared at the federal agent in sheer, unadulterated horror. The high-priced attorneys sitting beside him instantly grabbed their briefcases, frantically pushing their chairs back to distance themselves from their client as fast as humanly possible.
“You... you're making a mistake,” Gabriel stammered, his voice cracking hysterically as he pointed a shaking finger at Maya. “She’s framing me! She planted those files!”
Maya didn't yell. She didn't cry. She simply stood up, smoothing the front of her black mourning blazer, and looked straight into the terrified eyes of the man who had betrayed her family, her sister, and her memory.
“You always said you wanted to understand the real reason you married her, Gabriel,” Maya said softly, her voice carrying clearly across the silent courtroom. “Now you’re going to understand the real price of what you stole.”
Agent Chen stepped forward, pulling a pair of cold steel handcuffs from her tactical belt.

Before Gabriel could bolt for the exit, the federal marshal flanking the agent grabbed his arm, slamming his wrists against the wooden partition with a sharp, echoing clack.
As the handcuffs locked into place, Maya turned her back on him, walking down the center aisle toward the exit, knowing that her sister’s memory—and her surviving niece—were finally safe from the monster who had worn the mask of a best friend.
