Chapter 7 - The NICU Miracle

Forty-five minutes later, Maya pushed open the swinging doors of St. Jude Memorial’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, scrubbing her hands at the sanitation station with meticulous care.
The hum of incubators and the rhythmic, soft beep of heart monitors filled the sterile, warm room. Nurse Jenna—the same kind nurse who had handed her the baby three weeks ago—looked up from a charting station and offered a gentle, tired smile.
“You’re just in time,” Jenna whispered, walking over to incubator four. “She just finished her afternoon feeding, and her vitals have never looked better.”
Maya approached the clear plastic bassinet, her heart swelling with an aching, ferocious tenderness. Inside, resting against a soft flannel blanket, was her niece. She was so tiny she still looked like a doll, but her cheeks had filled out slightly, and a tuft of fine dark hair sat on top of her head—just like her mother’s.
Maya reached through the padded porthole of the incubator, sliding her index finger gently against the baby’s palm.
Instantly, microscopic fingers curled around Maya’s finger with surprising strength, gripping it tight.
“Hey there, little fighter,” Maya choked out, a tear splashing against the edge of the plastic unit. “Your mama would have been so proud of you. And I promise you, nobody is ever going to take advantage of you the way they took advantage of her.”
The door to the NICU clicked open behind them. Maya turned to see Agent Sarah Chen standing there, holding a thick file folder under her arm.
“Sorry to interrupt your family moment, Ms. Vance,” Agent Chen said respectfully, stepping closer to the incubator. “I thought you should know what our forensic accountants just pulled from Gabriel’s primary server.”
Maya pulled her hand back gently, stepping away from the bassinet and walking with the federal agent toward the quiet consultation corner of the unit. “What did you find, Agent Chen? Was there another offshore account?”
“Worse,” Agent Chen said, opening the folder and pointing to a printed digital chat log. “It wasn't just Gabriel and his mother looting your grandfather’s trust. We found extensive encrypted communications between Gabriel and an anonymous third party dating back four years—right before he started courting your sister.”

Maya’s blood ran cold. “Who is the third party?”
