Chapter 8 - The Shadow Partner

Maya stared down at the chat transcript, the letters blurring slightly beneath the harsh fluorescent lights of the hospital consultation nook.
“The metadata traces the IP address straight to a commercial real estate firm downtown,” Agent Chen explained, flipping the page to reveal a notarized corporate registry document. “A firm owned and operated by none other than your late grandfather’s estranged business partner, Arthur Pendelton.”
Maya gripped the edge of the laminate table so hard her knuckles turned white. “Pendelton? Grandfather cut all ties with him a decade ago after discovering he was embezzling from the commercial holdings. How does Gabriel even know him?”
“They were fraternity brothers at the university,” Agent Chen said grimly. “Pendelton knew about the ironclad marriage clause in your grandfather’s will long before Gabriel ever met your sister. They engineered the entire courtship, Maya. Gabriel was planted in your family’s life specifically to target Gemma’s vulnerability, marry her, and execute a multi-phase corporate takeover of the entire estate.”
A cold, heavy rage settled deep in Maya’s bones. It wasn't just a betrayal by a trusted best friend; it was an industrial-scale conspiracy executed against a young woman who couldn't defend herself.
“So Gabriel was just a pawn in a larger game,” Maya said, her voice eerily calm.
“A pawn who is currently facing twenty years in a federal penitentiary,” Agent Chen replied, closing the folder. “And Arthur Pendelton thinks he’s safe behind his corporate lawyers downtown. But our warrant desk is currently drafting a coordinated raid on Pendelton’s offices for tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM.”
Maya looked back through the glass partition toward incubator four, where her tiny niece was sleeping peacefully, completely unaware of the vultures that had tried to tear her family apart.
“I want in,” Maya said.
Agent Chen raised an eyebrow. “In where?”
May you like
“The raid,” Maya said, her amber eyes flashing with cold determination. “Pendelton thinks he’s untouchable because he hid behind corporate shields and manipulated a grieving family from a distance. I want to be there when the federal marshals kick his office doors down and read him his rights.”
