Chapter 6 - The Exit of the Deceived

The sharp, metallic click of the handcuffs echoing off the walnut paneling of the courtroom sounded like a gavel falling on Gabriel’s entire life.

“You can’t do this! You don't have jurisdiction over domestic trust partitions!” Gabriel screamed, thrashing wildly as Federal Marshal Vance and Agent Sarah Chen hauled him backward toward the side exit. His expensive defense attorneys had already vanished into the gallery crowd, packing their leather briefcases with frantic, cowardly speed.

Judge Robert Vance hammered his gavel twice, his face etched with disgust. “Mr. Miller, you are removed from this courtroom for contempt and federal felony detainment. This hearing is adjourned pending federal asset forfeiture review.”

Maya didn't turn around. She kept her stride steady and unyielding as she walked up the center aisle, her heels clicking rhythmically against the floorboards. She could hear Gabriel’s frantic shouting fading down the corridor as the heavy oak doors swung shut behind her, sealing off the noise.

Standing out in the sunlit corridor was Marcus Vance, the legal aid attorney who had helped her assemble the initial forensic packet. He held a manila folder against his chest, his expression solemn yet relieved.

“You held your ground in there, Maya,” Marcus said softly as she approached. “That was a masterclass in controlled execution.”

“It wasn't a masterclass, Marcus,” Maya replied, letting out a long, shuddering breath that felt like she was expelling months of poison from her chest. “It was overdue. But we aren't finished yet. The federal freeze covers the estate accounts, but what about the guardianship status of my niece?”

Marcus opened his folder, sliding out a single crisp legal form. “That’s actually why I intercepted you. Agent Chen just handed me the emergency emergency-custody injunction signed by Family Court. Because Gabriel has been formally charged with international wire fraud and asset stripping, his paternal rights have been suspended pending criminal trial. You are now the legal temporary guardian of baby Gemma.”

May you like

Maya’s hands flew to her mouth, a sudden wave of hot, stinging tears breaking through her composure. The nightmare wasn't a trap anymore; it was finally starting to clear.
