Chapter 1 - The Dark House

The sudden plunge into darkness wasn’t a standard power outage. Through the remote live-feed on my tablet, I watched the warm, recessed lighting of my Lake Tahoe living room die instantly, replaced only by the dim, flickering amber emergency strips along the baseboards.
A chorus of startled shouts echoed through the audio channel.
“What the hell happened?” David barked, dropping a heavy cardboard box of kitchenware onto my hardwood floor with a loud thud.
“Check the breaker panel in the garage!” my father yelled back, his voice tight with irritation. “Honestly, Elena always has to make everything difficult, even when she’s three hundred miles away.”
Olivia let out a sharp, anxious laugh, her silhouette visible against the moonlight pouring through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. “She probably called the utility company out of spite. Dad, are you sure her name is still on the title? What if she didn't actually transfer it yet?”
My father scoffed, waving a hand dismissively in the dark. “Don’t be ridiculous, Olivia. I told her it’s family property. A woman in uniform doesn't care about real estate; she cares about her pension and her medals. The title office already processed the paperwork I submitted. This house belongs to you now.”
I sat back in my chair at my apartment in San Diego, taking a slow sip of black coffee.
My father was a retired bureaucrat who believed every loophole could be exploited if you yelled loud enough. He assumed that because he had signed an affidavit claiming familial hardship, the county clerk would simply hand over a million-dollar lakefront deed without verifying signatures or power of attorney.
He didn't know that three days before I arrived in Tahoe, Michael Vance had filed an emergency injunction locking the property title under a federal military housing protection trust, rendering any local administrative transfer null and void.
On the screen, David came back inside, slamming the garage door shut behind him. “Breakers are locked! None of the switches work. Even the smart pad by the front door is dead.”
“Then use the manual key!” Olivia snapped.
“I am using the key, but the deadbolt won't turn! It’s like the internal cylinder jammed!”

I tapped the screen of my encrypted phone, opening Ethan Wright’s custom-built network interface. A small green confirmation prompt blinked in the corner: Smart-lock override engaged. Primary egresses secured. Environmental controls locked to low-temp conservation mode.
They were locked inside. Not by an electrical failure, but by design. And the temperature inside the house was about to drop very, very quickly.
