Chapter 39 - The Long Flight West

Forty-eight hours later, our private charter flight lifted off from a quiet tarmac outside Dulles, climbing steadily into the endless blue dome of the American sky, banking hard toward the west.

Inside the cabin, the atmosphere was a million miles away from the damp, suffocating tension of the Eisenhower bunker. There were no encrypted terminals blinking in the dark, no tactical radios squawking code words, and no lingering specters of Apex Defense Solutions or Project Chimera.

Chloe was fast asleep across three leather seats, her arms wrapped tightly around her backpack like a teddy bear, her face peaceful and unburdened.

Marcus sat across the aisle from me, nursing a cup of black coffee, watching the patchwork quilt of the American Midwest roll out beneath us in the afternoon sun. He looked over at me, a soft, easy grin breaking across his scarred face.

"You know, Commander," Marcus said, raising his paper cup in a quiet toast. "For a retirement plan, taking down a shadow government on a weekly basis is proving to be remarkably bad for my blood pressure."

I smiled back, leaning my head against the cool window pane as the plane leveled off at thirty thousand feet. "Consider this our final tour of duty, Marcus. From here on out, the only deadlines we answer to are sunset and dinner."

"I can live with that," Marcus replied, reaching across the narrow aisle to take my hand in his. His grip was warm, solid, and entirely grounding.

Below us, the endless expanse of the Great Plains gave way to the jagged, snow-capped peaks of the Rocky Mountains, glittering like diamonds in the crisp altitude light. The ghosts of Colorado, the high Sierra passes, the dusty motel in Tonopah, and the subterranean vaults of Washington were all fading rapidly into the rearview mirror of history.

We had survived the fire. We had dragged the dark secrets out into the blinding light of day. And now, the horizon ahead was wide open, clean, and entirely our own.
