Chapter 18 - Breach at Hawthorne

The Hawthorne facility looked like a scar across the base of the arid mountain ridge—a sprawling complex of reinforced concrete bunkers, corrugated steel warehouses, and chain-link fencing topped with coils of razor wire. A single heavy iron security gate barred the entrance, flanked by two armed guards standing inside a reinforced glass-and-steel pillbox.
I killed the truck’s headlights a quarter-mile back, coasting silently down the shoulder behind a row of dry Joshua trees before shifting into low gear and crawling toward the main gate at a steady, unhurried pace.
"This is it," I whispered, glancing at Chloe, who had her hand resting firmly on the grip of her sidearm. "When that gate opens, we have three minutes before their internal systems realize the override is counterfeit. Stay low, follow my lead, and don't hesitate."
"I'm ready," Chloe nodded, her eyes locked on the approaching guard tower.
As we rolled up to the iron gate, one of the guards stepped out of the pillbox, resting his hand casually on the rifle slung across his chest, signaling us to halt. He raised a hand, walking toward the driver's side window with a bored, routine expression.
At that exact second, Ethan executed the proxy handshake from San Diego.
The heavy red warning light on the gate’s electronic control panel suddenly flickered from alarm status to a steady, glowing green. A mechanical servo whined loudly, and the massive iron security gates began to slide open on their rusted tracks.
The guard stopped in his tracks, his eyes darting toward the control console in confusion before he tapped the comms piece on his collar. "Control, this is Gate One—we have an unexpected executive override sequence activating—"
I didn't give him a chance to finish the sentence.
Stepping hard on the accelerator, I launched the utility truck through the parting gates, blowing past the checkpoint before the guard could even raise his rifle.
Inside the compound, chaos was already beginning to ripple through the open-air courtyards. Operators in tactical gear rushed out of the main barracks building, shouting commands and pointing toward our vehicle as we sped across the asphalt toward the central munitions bunker.
"They're on to us!" Chloe shouted as a stray round pinged off the truck's rear quarter-panel.
"Hold on!" I yelled, cutting the steering wheel hard to the left and sliding the heavy truck to a halt right in front of the massive subterranean vehicle elevator doors.
We threw open the doors and bailed out of the truck, taking cover behind the concrete bulkhead as a volley of rifle fire chewed up the asphalt around us.
I raised my rifle, returning fire with three controlled, precise rounds that forced the nearest operators to dive behind a stack of steel supply crates.
"The elevator control panel!" I shouted over the gunfire, pointing to the rugged keypad mounted beside the heavy steel doors. "Use the override code Ethan sent to your tablet!"
Chloe scrambled across the concrete, pulling the encrypted tablet from her jacket and frantically punching in the sequence.
A heavy, industrial groan echoed from the subterranean machinery beneath our feet as the massive steel elevator platform unlocked and began to grind downward, opening a direct path into the dark, subterranean depths of the blacksite facility.

Without hesitation, we dove onto the descending platform just as a fresh wave of tactical operators rounded the corner of the barracks with their weapons raised.
The heavy steel doors slammed shut above us, plunging the elevator shaft into sudden, echoing darkness as we descended into the belly of the beast.
