Chapter 36 - The Quantum Kill Switch

I didn't answer with words. I took two deliberate steps forward, keeping my barrel locked on his chest.

"You think you're holding all the cards because you control the bunker's power grid," I said, my voice ice-cold. "You think because you erased my father and locked down the federal servers, you've sealed the loop."

The Director’s smile wavered for a fraction of a second, his eyes flickering toward Chloe's terminal.

That was all the distraction we needed.

"Chloe, now!" I roared.

Chloe slammed her palm down on the enter key of her terminal. A split second later, the fluorescent overhead lights in the bunker flickered, buzzed violently, and died, plunging the massive command theater into pitch-blackness.

Red emergency backup strobes instantly flooded the room with an eerie, pulsing crimson glow.

Marcus moved with the terrifying speed of a striking predator, tackling the Director across the mahogany briefing table just as two hidden side-doors burst open and four heavily armored tactical operators spilled into the room.

"Contact left!" Marcus yelled over the deafening whine of a localized electromagnetic pulse wave sweeping through the facility.

I dropped to one knee, tracking the lead operator rushing through the doorway. My first round caught his riot shield dead center, sending a shower of white sparks flying into the dim air. My second round punched through his shoulder plate, dropping him to the concrete floor.

Chloe was typing furiously on her terminal, her screen glowing like a beacon in the red haze. "I've tapped into their primary quantum core! I'm overriding their routing tables! They're trying to scrub the master database, but I'm locking the encryption keys behind a decentralized mirror!"

"Shut them down!" the Director screamed from beneath Marcus, who had him pinned against the steel briefing table with a combat knife pressed against his throat.

"It's already done, Director," Chloe shouted back triumphantly, spinning her screen around to flash a cascade of green verification codes. "Project Chimera's entire historical archive, asset roster, and offshore banking ledger have just been mirrored to five hundred independent journalist nodes across six continents. You didn't secure the continuity, you just broadcasted the execution live to the world."

The Director went completely rigid beneath Marcus, the color draining entirely from his face. The untouchable architect of the shadow government realized, in that single, crushing moment, that the machine was finally broken beyond repair.
