Chapter 4 - The Public Unveiling

The applause rolled through the ballroom like thunder, wave after wave of institutional approval and genuine awe. Photographers surged toward the edge of the stage, their motorized camera shutters clicking in a continuous, deafening staccato.

Nancy stood beside the podium, her hand resting naturally over her belly, feeling the rhythmic, comforting kick of the baby as if cheering her on.

Julian leaned into the microphone, his rich voice cutting effortlessly through the ambient noise of the room.

“Thank you, ladies and gentlemen,” Julian began, his hazel eyes scanning the crowd before settling for a fraction of a second on table four, where John Pierce was currently looking as though he had swallowed a live grenade. “When we first conceptualized the Haven of Hope, we weren't just looking to build a hospital wing. We were looking to create a space of healing, dignity, and light for children who need it most. And a building of that magnitude requires a rare kind of vision. It requires an architect who doesn't just draw lines on paper, but pours her soul into the stone and glass.”

He turned slightly, extending an open hand toward Nancy.

“Ladies and gentlemen, the sole creative genius behind the Haven of Hope: Ms. Nancy Pierce.”

The ovation redoubled, louder this time. A few people near the front rose to their feet, and within seconds, half the ballroom was standing.

Nancy stepped up to the microphone, her heart beating a steady, powerful rhythm. She hadn't prepared a speech—Julian hadn't told her he was going to credit her quite so publicly—but she didn't need notes. She knew every brick, every beam, and every tear that had gone into those blueprints.

“Thank you, Julian,” Nancy said, her voice clear, resonant, and entirely steady as it carried across the hall. “When you design a space for sick children, you have to remember that healing isn't just about medicine. It’s about light. It’s about giving families a place to breathe when the world feels like it’s collapsing around them. For eighteen months, this project was my world. And I am immensely proud to see it come to life tonight for the city of Chicago.”

Down in the audience, John Pierce shoved his chair back with a violent scrape against the hardwood floor.

“This is insane,” John muttered, his voice thick with rage as he glared up at the stage.

“John, sit down, everyone’s looking at us,” Tiffany hissed, pulling frantically at his tuxedo sleeve, her face burning with embarrassment as surrounding tables turned to stare at them.

“I am not sitting here while my ex-wife plays high-society architect with a billionaire who’s clearly funding her little vanity project!” John snarled, his pride shattered into a million jagged pieces.

Before Tiffany could stop him, John pushed his way out from the table, aggressively parting the sea of seated guests as he marched straight down the center aisle toward the stage, his eyes fixed entirely on Nancy.
