Chapter 8 - The Counter-Strike

Nancy stood up from the sofa so fast her head spun slightly, steadying herself against the edge of the table.
“What are you talking about, Albright?” Julian asked, rising smoothly to his feet, his brow furrowing as he crossed the room to take the tablet.
“Within ten minutes of being escorted out of the building, John contacted several prominent architectural trade publications and local gossip columnists,” Albright explained, tapping the screen to bring up a live-streaming news blog. “He’s holding an impromptu press conference in the lobby plaza across the street.”
Julian looked down at the screen, and a dark, dangerous shadow crossed his handsome face.
Nancy walked over, peering over his shoulder at the tablet display. A live video feed showed John standing in front of a cluster of microphones, his tuxedo jacket rumpled, his hair unkempt, glaring directly into the camera lens with a manic, desperate gleam in his eye.
“...let’s call this what it is—a massive, coordinated corporate fraud!” John’s amplified voice blared from the tablet speakers. “Julian Thorne is using a sham philanthropic project to funnel undisclosed capital into shell companies, utilizing an unqualified, uncertified designer—my ex-wife—as a front to launder millions in tech acquisitions! I have filed an emergency injunction with the state ethics board and the federal trade commission!”
The room fell dead silent.
Nancy felt a cold knot twist in her stomach. Even in his rage, John knew how to throw a grenade that would cause maximum collateral damage. By weaponizing regulatory jargon and dragging her professional integrity into the mud alongside Julian’s business empire, he was trying to tear down the entire project out of pure spite.
“The man is an absolute fool,” Julian muttered, his jaw clenching as he thumbed through the rapidly updating comment sections and media alerts. “An SEC investigation or a state ethics hold will stall the hospital wing construction for at least six months, freezing the escrow accounts.”
“Which means the funding for the pediatric wing won't clear, and the community will lose the only medical facility slated for that district,” Nancy added, her voice dropping into a steely, resolute register. She looked up at Julian, the lingering exhaustion completely gone, replaced by the sharp, focused clarity of a professional whose life’s work was being threatened.
“He thinks he can destroy my reputation because he couldn't control me,” Nancy said coldly.
Julian looked down at her, a spark of deep, fierce respect flashing in his hazel eyes. “What do you want to do, Nancy?”
“We don't hide behind PR statements or let his lawyers dictate the timeline,” Nancy replied, grabbing her small velvet clutch from the sofa. “We go down there. Right now. And we let John try to explain his accusations to a live press corps that has the complete, unredacted financial and structural audits of the Haven of Hope right in their hands.”
Julian’s lips curved into a slow, approving smile. He reached out, taking her hand in his.

“Albright,” Julian commanded without breaking eye contact with Nancy. “Notify our legal team to release the complete escrow transparency logs to every major news outlet in Chicago. And call the front security detail. We’re going down to the plaza.”
