Chapter 6 - The Flashbulb Fallout

The sharp, synchronized click of a dozen camera shutters pierced the suffocating silence of the grand ballroom like a volley of small-caliber gunshots.

John stood frozen at the foot of the stage, his hands gripping the polished brass railing so tightly his knuckles looked like carved chalk. The public display of intimacy between Julian Thorne and his pregnant ex-wife wasn't just a blow to his ego; it was a total, unmitigated demolition of his social standing in front of Chicago's elite.

“Get your hands off her!” John snarled, his voice cracking with a desperate, unhinged fury as he lunged upward toward the first step.

The security guards didn't hesitate this time. They moved with swift, professional precision, grabbing John by the shoulders and forcefully pivoting him away from the stage, dragging him backward down the center aisle as he flailed and shouted obscenities.

“You’re finished, Nancy!” John screamed over the murmurs of the crowd, his face twisted in rage as he was hauled toward the exit doors. “You both are! I’ll sue you into the ground!”

Tiffany scrambled out of her seat at table four, clutching her pink chiffon skirt as she rushed after him, her face burning with deep, humiliating mortification.

On stage, Nancy exhaled slowly, her heart hammering against her ribs. The adrenaline rush was starting to ebb, leaving behind a sudden, heavy wave of physical exhaustion. She felt Julian’s arm still securely wrapped around her waist, providing a steady, immovable anchor against the chaos swirling around them.

Julian pulled back just enough to look down into her eyes, his hazel gaze filled with a fierce, protective warmth.

“Are you alright?” he asked quietly, his thumb brushing lightly against her hip.

“I’m fine,” Nancy whispered, managing a small, authentic smile. “Honestly? That felt better than a thousand architectural awards.”

Julian chuckled softly, turning back to the microphone while the audience quickly recovered their composure, polite applause cautiously rippling through the room to cover the awkward disruption.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Julian announced smoothly, his rich voice commanding the entire hall once more. “As I was saying before our uninvited guest made his dramatic exit, true vision cannot be shaken by noise. Enjoy the evening, and let us celebrate the future of pediatric healing in Chicago.”

Minutes later, escorted by Ms. Albright through a private side exit away from the glaring flashbulbs of the main floor, Nancy found herself standing in a quiet, warmly lit VIP lounge overlooking the museum courtyard.

She sank into a plush leather sofa, letting out a long, shuddering breath as she rubbed her lower back where the tension of the evening had settled.

The heavy oak door swung open, and Julian walked in, loosening his black bow tie and tossing it onto a side table. He poured two glasses of sparkling cider from a silver tray, handing one to Nancy before taking a seat across from her.

“Well,” Julian said, offering a faint, lopsided smile. “I imagine that wasn't quite the quiet gallery evening you had planned.”

Nancy took a small sip of the cider, the crisp bubbles refreshing her dry throat. She looked at him, her expression shifting from relief to a sharp, curious inquiry.

“Julian, we need to talk about more than just architecture,” Nancy said, setting the glass down on the coffee table. “That wasn't just a gesture for the cameras out there. Why did you really do that? Why step into the middle of my personal mess with John?”

Julian’s smile faded, replaced by an expression of profound, quiet seriousness. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees.

“Because it wasn't just your mess anymore, Nancy,” Julian said softly. “And to be entirely honest... I’ve been waiting five years for the right moment to make John Pierce realize what a fool he was to let you walk away.”

Nancy’s breath caught in her throat. She stared at him, the pieces of a much larger, hidden puzzle suddenly beginning to assemble in her mind.

May you like

“Five years?” Nancy whispered. “Julian... what are you talking about?”
