Chapter 9 - The Plaza Showdown

The crisp Chicago night air was biting as Julian and Nancy stepped out of the museum’s side entrance and walked down the wide limestone steps toward the illuminated public plaza across the street.
A crowd of reporters, camera operators, and curious onlookers had swarmed around the fountain where John Pierce was still holding court, his face flushed with adrenaline and unhinged triumph.
“—and when the federal auditors finish digging into Thorne’s offshore accounts,” John was shouting into a forest of microphones, “you’ll find that this so-called philanthropic masterpiece is nothing more than a glorified embezzlement scheme!”
“Mr. Pierce!”
The sharp, resonant voice cut through the clamor of the courtyard like a whip.
The sea of reporters instantly pivoted away from John, their cameras flashing as Julian Thorne and Nancy Pierce walked out of the shadows and into the ring of television lights. Julian looked completely composed, his stride calm and deliberate, while Nancy walked beside him with her head held high, the forest-green velvet dress catching the amber glow of the plaza lamps.
John stopped mid-sentence, his mouth hanging open as he stared at them in utter disbelief.
“Thorne! You... you have some nerve showing your face out here—” John started, pointing an accusing finger.
“Save the dramatics for a courtroom, John,” Julian interrupted smoothly, stepping up to the edge of the press microphones. He pulled a slim, secured data drive from his breast pocket and held it up for the cameras to see. “You’ve spent the last ten minutes accusing my foundation of financial impropriety and questioning the professional credentials of lead architect Nancy Pierce. So, to ensure complete transparency, I have just authorized my legal team to release the entire, unredacted financial audit of the Haven of Hope project—alongside the complete municipal design patents.”
Murmurs rippled through the gathered reporters as cameras zoomed in on the data drive in Julian’s hand.
“Furthermore,” Julian continued, his voice ringing with absolute authority, “every dollar invested in this wing is fully accounted for, legally registered, and tied directly to public welfare trusts. Any claim to the contrary isn't just defamation—it’s a desperate, malicious stunt by a failing businessman whose own real estate portfolio has been bleeding capital for the past eight months.”
John’s face drained of color. The mention of his failing portfolio hit a raw, exposed nerve.
“That’s a lie!” John yelled, pushing his way forward through the press circle. “He’s lying! She didn't design anything! She’s just a washed-up amateur who couldn't even manage a household, let alone a multi-million-dollar hospital!”
Nancy stepped forward, taking the microphone from Julian’s hand with a calm, unshakable poise that made the surrounding reporters instantly quiet down.
She looked directly into the camera lens, her voice clear and unwavering as it carried across the plaza.
“You’re right about one thing, John,” Nancy said, her eyes locking onto her ex-husband with a terrifying, serene grace. “I didn't manage our household the way you wanted me to. Because I was too busy building something real while you were busy stealing other people's blueprints and hiding behind your father's corporate coattails.”
