Chapter 5 - The Breach at the Door

The door rattled in its frame so hard the brass desk lamp shook.
“Boss! Boss, open up!”
It was one of the security guards stationed outside, his voice muffled by the soundproof wood, but frantic, ragged with panic.
Dominic’s relaxed demeanor evaporated in a millisecond. The mafia boss moved with terrifying speed, drawing a heavy silver pistol from his shoulder holster and stepping smoothly around the desk in one fluid motion.
“Stay behind the mahogany paneling,” Dominic ordered me, his voice a low, hard hiss.
He moved to the door and unlocked the heavy deadbolt with a sharp, metallic clack, yanking it open.
Standing in the hallway wasn't the security guard alone. It was Henderson, the restaurant manager, being shoved forward by two federal agents in dark tactical windbreakers bearing bold yellow letters across the back: FBI - ORGANIZED CRIME TASK FORCE.

Behind them stood a tall, silver-haired man in an expensive charcoal suit, holding a federal search warrant in his hand.
“Dominic Russo,” the lead federal agent said, his voice cold and triumphant as he stepped across the threshold, his eyes sweeping past Dominic and locking directly onto me standing by the desk with the fifty-thousand-dollar check in my hand. “You’re under arrest for interstate racketeering and maritime trade fraud. And as for you, Miss Miller... I suggest you put that check down. We have a few questions about your unauthorized consultation work tonight.”
