Chapter 58 - The Digital Ghost

Hours later, the sun dipped below the jagged mountain ridge, plunging the Vermont cabin into deep indigo shadows lit only by the flickering orange glow of the stone hearth.

Julianna sat cross-legged on the floor in front of the primary monitor, her eyes bloodshot from hours of continuous data mining. Suddenly, a series of automated warning alerts flashed red across the screen, accompanied by a sharp, high-pitched acoustic ping from the local network hub.

"What is it, Jules?" Dominic asked, stepping over instantly and placing a firm hand on her shoulder.

"Someone is probing our localized firewall," Julianna whispered, her fingers blurring across the keyboard as she set up a counter-trace. "It's not a federal subpoena or a brute-force malware attack. It's a targeted, highly sophisticated zero-day exploit designed to track the metadata signature of the solid-state drives we plugged in."

"Can they trace our location?" Casey asked, her heart dropping as she stood up from the desk.

"Not through our local router—we're completely air-gapped," Julianna replied, her brow furrowing in intense concentration. "Wait. Look at the routing header... the query isn't coming from Washington or Boston. It's pinging from a decommissioned Cold War radar installation less than fifteen miles away on Mount Mansfield."

Alistair lowered his teacup onto the wooden table with a sharp click. "Mount Mansfield. The old Air Force early-warning site. It was supposedly decommissioned under SALT II, but rumors persisted for decades that the NSA kept subterranean listening posts operational beneath the summit."

Dominic checked his watch, his expression turning cold and resolute. "If they know we're here, they didn't track our IP address. They tracked the backup encryption key embedded in the physical hardware Julianna pulled from the vault."

"Which means they're already moving toward the cabin," Casey said, her voice steady despite the rising tension in the room.

"They'll be here in twenty minutes," Dominic said, reaching for his tactical gear. "We're packing up. Now."
