Chapter 10 - The Wire and the Web

The silence in the penthouse was suffocating. Outside, the blizzard howled against the reinforced glass, blotting out the Chicago skyline entirely.
"Explain," I said, my voice cutting through the heavy air with absolute, unyielding coldness. I set my coffee mug down on the table, the ceramic clinking against the glass like a warning shot. "Explain how Ryan Mercer—a small-time local real estate developer with a failing credit rating—managed to get his hands on syndicate funding without Arthur or his financial auditors noticing for nine years."
Eleanor let out a dry, humorless laugh, leaning slightly heavier on her cane.
"Because Ryan wasn't the mastermind, my dear," she said, taking a slow step closer to the desk where Arthur’s tablet still glowed with Vanessa’s extracted data files. "He was a front. A puppet placed in your path nine years ago with surgical precision. Somebody wanted a Bennett inside the inner circle of Chicago real estate development, and they chose a hungry, ambitious, morally bankrupt little architect to do it."
Arthur stepped forward, his eyes narrowing. "Who?"
Before Eleanor could answer, the tablet on the desk chimed again.
Not with a secure transfer ping this time.
It was an automated local alert from the building’s basement sub-level security grid.
A red warning banner flashed across the screen: EXTERNAL SYSTEM OVERRIDE - PRIVATE SERVER ROOM COMPROMISED.
Julian burst into the study, his face pale, breathing heavily. "Mr. Bennett! We've lost control of the primary data vault. Someone just bypassed the biometric firewalls from inside the building's private elevator shaft."
I looked down at the tablet.

On the screen, the extraction log from Vanessa’s laptop was still open. A secondary, hidden script was executing automatically, pulling every single file, land title, and offshore routing receipt we had just recovered—and sending it directly to an unknown IP address routing out of a secure terminal three floors below us.
"They're not running away," I whispered, the blood turning to ice in my veins as I realized the trap had just snapped shut around us. "They're downloading everything we have."
