Chapter 2 - The Sound of Glass Breaking

Up on the twenty-sixth floor of the Mercer Urban Development tower, Ryan was pouring himself a finger of twelve-year single malt from the crystal decanter on his office credenza.
Vanessa stood beside him, her manicured fingers tracing the lapel of his navy suit. The rain beat against the floor-to-ceiling windows, framing the gray panorama of the Chicago skyline like a theater backdrop.
"I still can't believe she didn't fight you on the alimony," Vanessa murmured, a triumphant smile playing on her lips. "I thought for sure she’d drag it out, demand a payout, make a scene about the condo."
"Claire doesn't have the spine for a fight," Ryan laughed, swirling the amber liquid in his glass. He walked over to the desk, tossing the signed divorce decree onto the mahogany surface beside a stack of architectural blueprints. "She’s a mouse, Vanessa. She spent nine years making quiet little dinners and folding my shirts. She wouldn't know how to capitalize on a real negotiation if it hit her in the face."
"Still," Vanessa mused, her eyes drifting toward the window as a sleek black limousine pulled away from the curb below. "Did you see who got into that car?"
"Probably some Uber Black she ordered with whatever she managed to save from her grocery allowance," Ryan scoffed, taking a sip of his scotch. "Let her go. We have a development board meeting on Monday, and I need the final sign-off on the North River parcels. Once the city council approves the variance, this firm is going to triple its valuation."
The intercom on his desk buzzed sharply.
Ryan frowned, setting his glass down and pressing the talk button. "What is it, Brenda?"
"Mr. Mercer," his secretary’s voice came through the speaker, tight and trembling with a strange, unnatural panic. "You... you have an urgent call on line three. It’s from the commercial lending division of First Chicago Trust."
Ryan exchanged an amused glance with Vanessa. "Tell them the quarterly interest payment is scheduled for the first of the month."
"Sir, they aren't calling about the interest," Brenda whispered. "They’re calling because the primary loan officer just received an official notice from the municipal water authority. All industrial zoning permits for the North River project have been frozen indefinitely due to an unresolved environmental easement held by... by a private trust called Bennett Holdings."
The glass in Ryan’s hand slipped, hitting the corner of the mahogany desk with a sharp crack. Amber liquid splashed across the blueprints, soaking into the pristine architectural renderings of his towers.

"Bennett?" Ryan froze, his face draining of color. "What the hell is Bennett Holdings?"
