Chapter 7 - The Mistress’s Gambit

Forty miles away, in a sleek, glass-walled penthouse overlooking Lake Michigan in Evanston, Vanessa Cole was dragging a designer leather suitcase across the hardwood floor with frantic, shaking hands.

Her phone buzzed violently on the kitchen island. She dropped a handful of diamond jewelry into her bag, rushed over, and swiped the screen without checking the caller ID.

"Ryan? Did you fix it? Did the judge throw out the warrant?" she babbled, her voice climbing an octave into sheer panic.

"Ryan is currently enjoying the hospitality of the federal detention center downtown, Miss Cole," a cool, synthesized voice responded through the speaker.

Vanessa froze, the diamond necklace slipping from her fingers and clattering against the marble countertop. "Who is this?"

"Someone who knows that you transferred four hundred thousand dollars of investor capital into a private Swiss account registered under your mother’s maiden name last Tuesday," the voice continued calmly. "And someone who is currently watching your building's underground parking garage."

Vanessa spun around, dropping her phone, and rushed to the floor-to-ceiling windows. Down in the courtyard below, two unmarked black SUVs had blocked both exits of the subterranean garage. Men in dark coats were stepping out into the sleet, moving with the cold, unhurried efficiency of predators closing in on a wounded deer.

Panic surged through her chest. She grabbed her laptop from the dining table, flipped it open, and frantically began typing a command sequence to wipe her local server clean.

"Looking for your escape route, Vanessa?"

The voice didn't come from the phone lying on the kitchen island.

It came from the dark hallway behind her bedroom.

Vanessa whirled around, her breath catching in her throat as a tall, broad-shouldered man stepped out of the shadows. It wasn't Julian. It wasn't Arthur.

It was a man she had only ever seen in high-security corporate briefings—Arthur Bennett’s chief legal enforcer, a man whose reputation for erasing corporate liabilities was whispered about in every boardroom in Chicago.

"You're trespassing," Vanessa whispered, backing away until the edge of the glass table bit into her lower back.

"And you're deleting evidence belonging to Bennett Global Energy," the enforcer replied smoothly, pulling a sleek, heavy-duty data-extraction device from his coat pocket. "Step away from the laptop, Miss Cole. We're going to have a long conversation about what Ryan promised you—and what you're about to give back."
