Chapter 9 - The Ghost from Zurich

"She didn't die," a cold, clipped voice echoed through the open doorway of the study before Julian could even finish walking back down the hall.
We both turned.
Standing in the entryway, leaning slightly on an ebony cane with an ivory handle, was an elderly woman wearing a sharp houndstooth wool coat. Her silver hair was pinned back in a severe bun, and her eyes—sharp, calculating, and unmistakably familiar—scanned the fifty-floor penthouse with the air of someone who owned the building long before Arthur ever signed the deed.
"Eleanor," Arthur breathed, taking a slow step backward from his desk. "What are you doing here? How did you get past lobby security?"
"Your security is impressive, Arthur, but it was designed to keep out corporate raiders, not ghosts from your past," the elderly woman said, her voice dry and steady as she walked unhurriedly toward us, her cane tapping sharply against the polished marble floor.
She stopped three feet away, her gaze shifting past my uncle to lock directly onto my face.
For a terrifying second, I felt as though I were looking into a mirror twenty-five years in the future. The high cheekbones, the severe, piercing eyes, the rigid posture—it was like looking at a portrait of my mother’s side of the family that I had never been allowed to see.
"You have your mother's stubborn jaw, child," Eleanor said, her voice softening just a fraction. "And clearly, you have her talent for destroying men who think they can outsmart a Bennett."
"Who are you?" I asked, my fingers tightening around my coffee mug as I held my ground.
"I am your grandmother, Claire," she replied simply, pulling off her leather gloves and tossing them onto the glass table. "And I am here to tell you that Ryan Mercer’s little embezzlement scheme wasn't an isolated incident. He wasn't just stealing from local investors. He was being funded by the exact same syndicate that forced your mother into hiding three decades ago."
Arthur clenched his jaw, his face tightening into a mask of cold fury. "Eleanor, that's enough. The past is buried."
May you like
"The past is never buried, Arthur," Eleanor snapped back, turning her sharp gaze onto my uncle. "Especially not when your ex-son-in-law just handed the syndicate direct access to Bennett Global Energy’s primary infrastructure grids through a backdoor shell company in the Cayman Islands. Ryan didn't just ruin his own company today, Claire. He just opened the front door for people who want to bring down your entire family."
