Chapter 2 - The Sunrise Visitor

The secure console beeped a second time, a short, clipped tone that cut through the silence of the penthouse suite like a scalpel.

Matteo swung his legs over the side of the mattress, his bare feet hitting the imported hardwood floor with a soft thud. He didn't reach for his gun immediately, but his hand hovered over the holster resting on the nightstand as he punched a sequence into the wall-mounted intercom.

"Report," Matteo commanded, his voice cold enough to freeze water.

Dante’s voice crackled through the speaker, tight with an urgency that professional enforcers rarely allowed to show. "Boss, we have an unannounced arrival at the private elevator. Perimeter sensors didn't trigger, which means someone used a master override code."

Matteo’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle jumped in his cheek. "Whose code?"

"Uncle Gianni," Dante replied. "And he's not alone. He brought two cars from the compound in Coral Gables, and he’s bypassing the lobby security entirely."

Elena stood up slowly from the edge of the bed, smoothing down her wrinkled scrubs. The shift was supposed to end at six a.m., and she still had two hours left of a nightmare she hadn't signed up for. "Who is Uncle Gianni?" she asked, her voice steady despite the adrenaline spiking in her veins.

Matteo looked back at her over his shoulder, his dark eyes shadowed with a warning that didn't need translation. "Gianni Vescari is the man who thinks he runs this family because my father is dead and my brother is in a box. He’s the one who’s been sending nurses here hoping one of them would finish the job, or at least break me completely."

"You think your own uncle is trying to poison you?"

"I don't think. I know," Matteo said, pulling a black cotton tee over his broad shoulders and sliding the Glock into his waistband with practiced efficiency. "And if he finds you here—alive, coherent, and sleeping against my shoulder—he won't just fire the agency. He’ll assume you're an asset, a plant, or a new target."

"I'm a hospice aide," Elena snapped back, stepping directly into his line of sight. "I don't do mafia politics, Mr. Vescari. I manage pain profiles and monitor vitals. If your uncle wants to play turf war in a hospital room, he can wait until my shift is officially over at six."

Matteo almost let out a dry, humorless laugh. "You've got iron in your spine, Elena. I'll give you that. But iron bends under a blowtorch."

Before he could say another word, the heavy exterior doors of the private elevator dinged.

A muffled chime echoed down the private hallway, followed by the sound of heavy, unhurried footsteps approaching the suite's double doors. Dante’s voice came over the intercom again, strained and sharp: "Boss, they're at the threshold. I can't hold them without a firefight in the hallway."

Matteo looked around the room once, his eyes landing on the adjoining en-suite bathroom—a sprawling marble-tiled space with a secondary exit leading to the service stairwell.

"Get in the bathroom," Matteo ordered, grabbing her arm. "Lock the door. Do not come out until I unlock it from the outside, no matter what you hear."

"What about you?"

May you like

"I'm going to go greet my uncle," Matteo said, a terrifying, razor-thin smile touching his lips. "Let's see how much he missed me."
