Chapter 3 - The Family Dinner

The heavy oak doors of the suite swung open with a slow, deliberate creak before Matteo even reached the entryway.
Gianni Vescari stepped into the penthouse like he owned the building—and legally, through a web of shell corporations and Miami real estate trusts, he probably did. He was a tall man in his late sixties with silver-rimmed glasses, a bespoke Italian wool suit that didn't have a single wrinkle, and eyes as cold and gray as wet cement. Behind him stood two massive guards holding leather briefcases, their suits cut wide to accommodate shoulder holsters.
"Matteo, my boy," Gianni said, spreading his arms wide in an obscene display of familial warmth. "They tell me you haven't left this floor in three weeks. A man who hides in a cage starts to smell like an animal."
Matteo leaned casually against the doorframe of the master bedroom, his hands tucked loosely into the pockets of his dark trousers, keeping himself positioned between Gianni and the hallway leading to the en-suite bathroom where Elena was locked.
"The cage keeps the wolves out, Uncle," Matteo replied, his voice level and dangerously quiet. "Especially the ones wearing tailored Brioni suits."
Gianni’s smile didn't reach his eyes. He strolled further into the room, his polished oxfords clicking against the hardwood floor. He glanced at the untouched breakfast tray, the rumpled sheets of the bed, and the single coffee mug sitting on the dresser with a smudge of pink lipstick on the rim.
Gianni stopped dead. He turned his head slowly, his sharp gaze locking onto the mug.
"I heard rumors," Gianni murmured, walking closer to the dresser and picking up the ceramic mug by the handle, inspecting the lipstick stain as if it were a rare specimen under a microscope. "The agency sent a new girl last night. A temporary. A nobody from some strip-mall staffing service in Hialeah."
"The agency sends whoever is on rotation," Matteo said, not moving an inch. "You know how the labor shortage is in healthcare these days."
"Do I?" Gianni set the mug down with a sharp clink. He turned around, his silver eyebrows arching downward in a sudden, predatory scowl. "Because my sources told me she wasn't like the others. The last one was found crying in the stairwell by three a.m. This one... well, Dante sent a very interesting photograph to an interested party about an hour ago."
Matteo’s blood ran cold, though his face remained a mask of carved stone. Dante. The traitorous bastard had a direct line to his uncle all along.
"Dante works for me," Matteo said, his voice dropping into a lethal register.
"Dante works for the Vescari family, Matteo. And right now, the family is worried that your insomnia is making you sloppy," Gianni stepped closer, lowering his voice to a hiss. "You're vulnerable. You're distracted. And if a stray nurse manages to get under your skin, she becomes a liability. A leverage point. In our business, liabilities get dropped into the canal."
Inside the en-suite bathroom, pressed flat against the cold marble wall with her hand clamped over her mouth to muffle her breathing, Elena heard every single word.
Her fingers gripped the edge of her nurse’s pocket notebook, her mind racing. She wasn't just a hospice aide anymore. She was a target.
Matteo’s voice cut through the tension in the outer room, sharp as a switchblade. "Touch her, Gianni, and I won't just cut you out of the shipping ports in Doral. I’ll feed you to the sharks off Key Biscayne myself."
Gianni let out a low, raspy chuckle. "We'll see who's feeding who by midnight, nephew. Enjoy your nurse while she's still breathing."
With a sweep of his hand, Gianni turned on his heel and walked out, his guards trailing behind him like dark ghosts.
The heavy doors clicked shut.

Silence descended on the penthouse again, heavier and deadlier than before.
