Chapter 5 - The Lockdown

The red emergency strobe lights mounted in the hallway ceilings suddenly blinked to life, bathing the penthouse suite in an intermittent, frantic crimson glare.

Before Matteo could reach the console, the master control panel beeped erratically, displaying a glowing system override warning: PERIMETER BREACH — SERVICE ELEVATOR OVERRIDE ACTIVE.

"Dante didn't just run," Matteo muttered, his voice dropping into a tone of absolute, chilling clarity. "He disabled the exterior electronic locks on the service bay. Gianni’s clean-up crew is already coming up the back way."

Elena’s heart skipped a beat. She grabbed her leather bag, throwing the strap over her shoulder. "How many?"

"Four professionals. Minimum," Matteo said, ripping the drawer of the nightstand open to reveal a second firearm—a compact Sig Sauer pistol—which he checked, racked, and extended toward her handle-first.

Elena stared at the black steel weapon like it was a venomous snake. "I don't hold guns. I hold scalpels and IV lines."

"Tonight, you hold a gun, or you don't survive the next five minutes," Matteo said, his voice brooking no argument. He grabbed her hand and physically curled her fingers around the textured grip of the Sig Sauer, his warm palm pressing over hers to steady her trembling grip. "Safety is off. Pull the trigger straight back. Don't think about where you're aiming; just aim for the center mass."

The heavy steel door leading to the private service stairwell let out a deafening thud as something heavy slammed against it from the outside. Someone was using a hydraulic breaching tool.

"They're at the service landing," Matteo said, moving with fluid, deadly grace toward the hallway intersection. He pulled his own Glock, positioning himself flat against the wall beside the corridor archway. "Get behind the marble kitchen island. Do not pop your head up unless you see someone coming through that door who isn't me."

"Matteo—"

"Stay down, Elena!" he barked over the rhythmic pounding of the breaching tool.

CRACK.

The heavy steel frame of the service door splintered inward, the reinforced bolts shearing off like toothpicks. Two dark silhouettes in tactical gear, faces hidden behind black balaclavas and night-vision goggles, poured into the hallway with submachine guns raised.

Matteo fired twice before they could level their barrels.

The first intruder dropped instantly, spinning hard against the drywall before collapsing into a heap. The second returned fire wildly, chewing up the imported crown molding and sending splinters of wood flying across the room as Matteo slid behind a structural concrete pillar.

Elena crouched behind the thick granite kitchen island, her hands shaking so violently she could barely hold the Sig Sauer. The smell of cordite and burnt powder filled the air, sharp and suffocating.

Through the chaos, a third figure stepped casually into the shattered doorway, holding a silenced pistol. It wasn't one of the masked mercenaries.

It was Dante.

The traitorous guard smiled a cold, crooked smile as he stepped over the body of his fallen comrade, looking directly toward the kitchen alcove where Elena was hiding.

"Come on out, nurse," Dante called out, his voice echoing over the ringing alarms. "The boss's time is up, and Gianni wants a clean sweep of the board."

Matteo shifted his stance behind the pillar, his breathing controlled, his eyes locked onto Dante through the mirror reflection in the stainless-steel refrigerator door.

Before Matteo could pull the trigger, a red laser dot flickered across the wall, landing square on Matteo’s chest—projected from the shadows behind the elevator doors.

Elena saw it before Matteo did.

Without thinking, without calculating the odds, driven by the same fierce instinct that had kept her awake beside his bed all night, Elena stood up from behind the island, raised the Sig Sauer with both shaking hands, and pulled the trigger.
