Chapter 9 - The Trap Closes

The screech of police sirens bounced off the concrete pillars, filling the underground garage with a deafening roar of flashing red and blue lights.

Before Gianni’s guards could draw their weapons, four heavily armed officers from the Miami-Dade Major Crimes unit poured out of the cruisers with tactical rifles raised, screaming orders to drop their weapons and hit the deck.

“Federal and state warrant! Nobody move!” Captain Marcus Vance shouted, stepping forward with his badge held high, his sharp eyes fixed squarely on Gianni Vescari.

Panic flashed across Gianni’s face for the first time all night. He lunged backward toward his town car, screaming at his men, “Shoot them! Get me out of here!”

It was a fatal mistake.

One of the enforcers made a half-hearted motion toward his shoulder holster, but before his fingers could wrap around the grip, a tactical officer fired a non-lethal beanbag round that caught the guard square in the chest, dropping him to the asphalt with a wheezing gasp. The other two guards immediately threw their hands in the air, dropping their weapons to the ground and sinking to their knees.

Gianni slammed his hand against the rear door handle of his car, but Matteo was already there.

With a single, violent motion, Matteo grabbed his uncle by the lapels of his expensive Italian wool suit, hauled him away from the vehicle, and slammed him hard against the side panel of the car with enough force to rattle the windows.

“You’re done, Gianni,” Matteo whispered, his voice vibrating with a decade of suppressed rage. “The ports, the estate, the shell companies—it’s all being audited as of five minutes ago.”

Gianni let out a raspy, defiant laugh, even with a police officer’s rifle barrel pointed six inches from his temple. “You think arresting me saves you, Matteo? Look at the timestamp on the digital archive in that crate! The auto-upload protocol was triggered the second you stepped out of the elevator. If I go down, the state tax board receives every single illegal corporate ledger linking your father—and you—to the offshore accounts. You’re going to prison right beside me.”

Matteo didn't flinch. He didn't even look at the crate.

“Let it upload,” Matteo said coldly. “I’d rather spend the rest of my life in a federal penitentiary than spend another second looking over my shoulder wondering which family member is going to poison my coffee next.”

Captain Vance stepped up, slapping a pair of cold steel handcuffs onto Gianni’s wrists with practiced efficiency. “You have the right to remain silent, Mr. Vescari. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

As Gianni was dragged toward the back of a police cruiser, cursing and thrashing against the officers, the garage slowly settled back into an eerie, smoking quiet.

The police officers began securing the scene, bagging weapons, and taking statements from the trembling guards.

Matteo stood alone by the steel medical crate, staring down at the flashing LED indicator light on the side of the digital storage unit. The upload progress bar was blinking rapidly: 89%... 92%... 95%...

I walked over to him, stepping carefully around a discarded shell casing, and placed my hand gently on his arm.

“Matteo,” I whispered. “Stop it.”

He looked down at me, his dark eyes shadowed with exhaustion, the fight finally draining out of his frame. “If that file uploads, my entire life—everything I built to distance myself from my father’s sins—goes up in smoke.”

“Then let it burn,” I said softly. “You survived the night. Your uncle is going away. The rest of it is just paper.”

He stared at me for a long, silent moment. Then, with a sudden, decisive movement, he reached down, popped the main battery hatch off the side of the storage unit, and ripped the lithium power cell straight out of its housing.

The flashing LED light went instantly dark. The upload stopped at 98%.
