Chapter 49 - Gathering the Threads

Within twenty-four hours, Megan and Marcus had mobilized a counter-offensive. They didn't rely on the sluggish machinery of federal regulators; instead, they went straight to the root of the financial plumbing that Pacific Horizon was attempting to exploit.

Late that evening, Erica—who had flown in from London on an emergency red-eye flight after receiving Megan’s encrypted data ping—sat at the kitchen island in Scottsdale, her fingers flying across her high-end terminal as the screen illuminated her face in a pale, ethereal blue.

"Marcus was right," Erica said, not looking up as lines of decrypted code cascaded down her monitor. "Pacific Horizon isn't operating on fresh capital. It's a hollowed-out corporate shell using an automated smart-contract loop. Every time they file a lien in Maricopa County, the cryptographic signature pings a dormant relay server hidden inside an old telecommunications vault in Zurich."

Megan stood beside her, holding a sleeping Clara cradled softly against her shoulder. "Can you trace the ping back to its source?"

"I'm already inside their secondary firewall," Erica murmured, a tight, confident smile touching her lips. "When Viktor’s proxy filed that motion, he left a digital breadcrumb—a master decryption key linked to his personal satellite phone. The same phone he used to record that farewell message from the Alps."

Marcus, sitting across the island with a cup of black coffee, leaned forward eagerly. "Does that mean we can ping his exact physical location?"

"Better than that," Erica replied, hitting a final, decisive keystroke on her keyboard. "I didn't just trace the signal. I rerouted the automated smart-contract loop. Every time Pacific Horizon attempts to execute a lien against your municipal properties now, the ledger automatically redirects their remaining escrow funds into the Maricopa County public restitution pool."

Megan stared at the screen, watching as lines of red authorization text flipped instantly to green, confirming the asset seizure. "You drained their operational war chest?"

May you like

"Completely," Erica said, leaning back and stretching her arms overhead. "Viktor can file all the fraudulent motions he wants, but without liquid capital to pay his proxy attorneys, the Nevada firm will drop his representation before the end of the week."

Megan felt a profound sense of release wash over her, lighter and sharper than ever before. The ghost of her uncle’s empire hadn't returned to conquer them; it had walked directly into a trap of its own making.
