Chapter 60 - Dawn Over the Desert

By sunrise, the living room had returned to an uncanny stillness.

The federal marshals, notified by Erica’s automated secure uplink, had arrived quietly an hour before dawn to take Viktor into custody—not as a violent criminal hauled away in chains, but as an elderly man answering a voluntary subpoena regarding corporate asset dissolution. There were no flashing sirens, no drawn weapons, and no media cameras. Just a quiet car idling in the driveway, and a handshake between Viktor and Marcus at the front door before the older man stepped into the cool morning air.

Megan stood on the back patio with Clara resting comfortably against her shoulder, watching the first golden rays of the Arizona sun crest over the distant McDowell Mountains. The desert air was crisp, clean, and entirely still.

The lemon tree in the corner of the yard caught the morning light, its leaves glistening with dew.

Marcus stepped out through the sliding glass door, holding two mugs of steaming coffee and handing one to Megan with a gentle, reassuring smile.

"Erica’s wrapping up the final server wipes from the kitchen," Marcus said quietly, wrapping his free arm around Megan’s waist and pulling them both close. "The county title office just confirmed the deed transfers for the downtown collective. They’re officially community-owned, free and clear of any encumbrances."

Megan took a sip of her coffee, letting the warmth settle through her as she looked out over the quiet neighborhood. Down the hall, she could hear Clara softly babbling in her crib as her mother moved in to start the morning routine.

The ghost of the Vance empire was finally gone—not buried in a Swiss vault or hidden behind corporate offshore accounts, but dissolved into the open, sunlit expanse of the desert. The names, the ledgers, the decades of shadowed influence—all of it had been traded for something real, something permanent, and something entirely their own.

Megan’s phone buzzed gently in her coat pocket.

She pulled it out, expecting another automated alert or a residual ping from London. Instead, it was a simple, unsecured text message from an international prefix she recognized instantly from the alpine reports—a short dispatch sent from Zurich by way of London.

The ledger is closed. The road is clear.

Megan stared at the screen for three beats, a faint smile touching the corners of her lips. She locked the phone, slipped it back into her pocket, and tightened her hold on Clara as the desert morning blossomed into full, brilliant light.
