Chapter 1 - The Echo of Little Footsteps

The heavy oak doors of the Hennepin County courtroom groaned as they swung inward, the sound reverberating through the hushed gallery like a dry bone snapping. Every eye in the room pivoted away from the bench and locked onto the small figure entering from the corridor.

Violet walked with tiny, halting steps, her worn stuffed rabbit tucked under one arm like a shield against a hostile world. Her yellow cardigan seemed too large for her thin frame, sleeves rolled up twice at the wrists. She looked overwhelmed by the vaulted ceilings and the towering mahogany walls, yet there was a steady, unblinking determination in her wide eyes as she scanned the rows of seats before finding her father.

Gabriel Linwood looked as though he had been struck in the chest with a lead pipe. The confident, wealthy developer who had strolled into the courthouse twenty minutes earlier with his mistress clinging to his arm now sat rigid, his color fading from his cheeks until his face matched the stark white of his collar.

"Violet..." Gabriel breathed, the word slipping out of his throat as a strangled whisper. He started to stand, half-rising from his chair before the sharp rap of Judge Beatrice Holloway’s gavel stopped him cold.

"Remain seated, Mr. Linwood," the judge commanded, her voice dropping into a register that brook no argument.

Beside him, Samantha Drake’s carefully applied makeup suddenly looked entirely inadequate. The proud smirk that had graced her lips moments earlier had dissolved into a tight, panicked grimace. She reached out, her manicured fingers brushing against Gabriel’s sleeve, but he jerked his arm away as if her touch burned him.

Clara Linwood stood frozen beside her attorney, her left hand still instinctively shielding her eight-month pregnant belly. Her breath caught in her throat. Violet was not supposed to be here. She was supposed to be across town at her maternal grandmother’s house, safely insulated from the ugliness of the divorce. Seeing the little girl standing alone in the center of a federal courtroom filled Clara with a sudden, icy wave of terror.

"Step forward, little one," Judge Holloway said, her voice softening just enough to pierce the heavy tension in the room. She gestured toward the witness stand. "You don't need to be afraid. No one is going to hurt you here."

Violet swallowed hard, clutching her stuffed rabbit tighter against her chest, and walked toward the bench. Her small patent-leather shoes clicked rhythmically against the polished marble floor.
