Chapter 6 - The Weight of the Past

The heavy brass-trimmed doors of the Hennepin County courthouse slammed shut behind Clara, swallowing Gabriel’s frantic, muted appeals into the echoing stone lobby.
The damp autumn air outside bit sharply against Clara’s skin, but she barely felt it. Her arm remained wrapped securely around Violet, who clutched her worn stuffed rabbit with one hand while gripping the fabric of Clara’s coat with the other. The walk down the granite steps felt like stepping out of a suffocating fog into a world where oxygen actually existed again.
A sleek black sedan pulled up smoothly to the curb, its hazard lights blinking. The rear door clicked open, and Clara’s longtime attorney, Mr. Harrison—a silver-haired veteran of family law whose eyes usually missed nothing—stepped out, holding an umbrella against the spitting drizzle.
"Clara, thank God," Harrison said, his voice laced with profound relief. He looked down at Violet and offered a gentle, reassuring smile. "And hello, young lady. You did an extraordinary thing in there today."
"Can we go home now, Mr. Harrison?" Violet whispered, her eyelids drooping with exhaustion after the emotional storm of the courtroom.
"We’re going somewhere much safer than home, sweetie," Harrison murmured softly. He turned his gaze back to Clara, his expression turning grave as he helped them into the warm interior of the car. Once the doors sealed shut against the Minneapolis chill, he slid into the front passenger seat and turned back to face them. "Clara, that was a masterclass in survival, but the storm isn’t over. Judge Holloway’s freeze on Linwood Enterprises triggered an automatic audit, but Gabriel’s brother, Marcus, has already filed a motion to intervene."
Clara’s heart skipped a beat, a cold spike of adrenaline shooting through her chest. "Marcus? What does my brother-in-law have to do with this? He lives across state lines."
Harrison grimaced, pulling a thick manila folder from his briefcase. "Marcus isn't just an out-of-town relative. According to preliminary banking subpoenas pulled twenty minutes ago, Marcus is the registered managing partner of the shell company where Samantha Drake deposited the first tranche of your siphoned marital assets."

Before Clara could process the horrifying breadth of the betrayal, her phone—resting on the leather seat beside her—flashed violently with an incoming call from an unrecognized, restricted number.
