Chapter 7 - The Voice from the Shadows

The phone buzzed against the leather seat, its harsh vibration cutting through the quiet hum of the sedan's engine.

Clara stared at the glowing screen, her thumb hovering over the reject icon.

"Answer it on speaker," Harrison advised quietly, his eyes fixed on the rearview mirror as the car merged into the afternoon traffic. "Let's see what card they're trying to play now."

Clara swiped the green icon and held the phone between herself and Violet, who was curled up quietly against her side.

"Hello?" Clara’s voice was steady, hardened by the crucible of the courtroom.

"Clara," a smooth, chillingly familiar voice purred through the speaker. It wasn't Gabriel. It was Marcus Linwood. "I hear you had quite a dramatic afternoon in Judge Holloway's court. Dragging family names through the mud must be exhausting in your condition."

Clara’s jaw tightened. "Save the corporate charm, Marcus. Your role in the asset-stripping scheme is already flagged by federal subpoenas. You don't have a leg to stand on."

A low, unbothered chuckle resonated through the line. "Subpoenas, Clara? Bless your heart. You think a family court judge freezing a local commercial account stops a multi-state real estate portfolio? Gabriel is a fool who couldn't manage a lemonade stand, let alone a development firm, but he signed binding collateral agreements six months ago."

"Agreements forged under fraudulent concealment are legally void," Harrison interjected sharply, leaning toward the phone. "This is Arthur Harrison, Mr. Linwood. I suggest you consult your defense counsel before you make threatening statements to a petitioner on an unsecure line."

Marcus’s tone instantly dropped its playful veneer, turning razor-sharp. "Ah, counselor. I was wondering when you'd poke your head out. Let's talk reality. That house you're trying to reclaim? The mortgage is held by a private equity fund in Delaware that I control. If Clara doesn't walk away from the asset-recovery petition by tomorrow morning at nine, that house goes into immediate foreclosure. She’ll be giving birth while her belongings are tossed onto the icy sidewalk."

"You wouldn't dare," Clara gasped, her protective maternal instinct flaring into burning fury.

"Try me," Marcus whispered coldly. "See you in court."

The line clicked dead.
