Chapter 5 - The Unbroken Bond

The courtroom felt lighter without Samantha Drake’s presence, though the air remained thick with the electrical charge of impending ruin for Gabriel Linwood.
"Violet," Judge Holloway said gently, looking down at the little girl still sitting in the witness chair. "You did a very brave thing today, sweetheart. You told the truth when it mattered most."
Violet gave a small, solemn nod, clutching her stuffed rabbit tighter. "Is Mama okay?"
Clara couldn't hold it back any longer. Tears spilled over her eyelashes, hot and fast, but for the first time in a year, they weren't tears of defeat. She walked swiftly down the center aisle, bypassing the defense table entirely, and reached out her arms as the bailiff helped Violet down from the witness stand.
The little girl launched herself forward, burying her face into Clara’s shoulder. Clara wrapped her arms around Violet, holding her close while carefully balancing the eight-month pregnancy, pressing kisses into the top of her soft brown hair.
"I'm okay, baby," Clara whispered, her voice choked with emotion. "We're going to be okay. I promise you."
Gabriel sat alone at the defense table, abandoned by his mistress, stripped of his fraudulent assets, and utterly ruined in the eyes of the court and his own child. He slowly turned his head, watching his wife and daughter hold each other with a bond that no forged document or corporate lie could ever break.
"Clara..." Gabriel croaked, reaching out a trembling, empty hand toward them. "Please... let's talk about this. For the baby. For our family."
Clara didn't even turn around. Still holding Violet securely against her hip, she looked back over her shoulder just once, her eyes colder and sharper than winter steel.
"The only thing we have left to talk about, Gabriel," Clara said clearly, "is how many years a federal judge will give you for grand larceny and perjury."

She turned her back on him completely, walking down the aisle toward the rear exit with her head held high.
Behind her, the bailiff stepped forward, placing a heavy hand on Gabriel’s shoulder as Judge Holloway scheduled the emergency asset-seizure hearing for ten o'clock the following morning.
