Chapter 10 - The Nursery Toxin

The sterile white walls of the county medical annex seemed to close in around Clara as she pressed the phone to her ear. Eleanor stood right beside her, while Detective Vance held the lab report printout under the harsh overhead examination light.
"Can you repeat that, Doctor?" Clara asked, her voice barely above a whisper, her knuckles turning white as she clutched the receiver.
"The trace elements found in the formula aren't standard sedatives, Mrs. Sterling," the pediatrician’s voice replied over the secure line, grave and deliberate. "It’s a specialized heavy-metal chelating compound combined with a low-dose neuro-blocker. If administered over a prolonged period, it would have systematically suppressed your infant’s cognitive development while mimicking the symptoms of a congenital neurological disorder."
Clara stared blankly at the wall, the horrific puzzle pieces finally snapping together in her mind. Helen hadn't just wanted the baby out of the way for Sunday dinner. She had been poisoning the infant’s milk from day one to create a medical narrative—to prove that Clara was raising a sickly, defective child who needed to be institutionalized under state care.
"She was doing it slowly," Clara breathed, horror washing over her. "Just like she did with my mother's health records twenty-five years ago."
"We've seized the remaining supply from the estate's pantry," Detective Vance confirmed, tapping the lab report with his pen. "Every single batch of imported formula delivered to the house over the last three months was custom-ordered through an unregistered pharmaceutical shell company."
Eleanor's eyes flashed with a dangerous, icy fire. She turned toward the hallway window looking out over the city skyline, where the first faint gray light of dawn was beginning to break over the horizon.
"Helen didn't just want the estate, Clara," Eleanor said quietly, her voice carrying an ominous weight. "She was cleaning up the last living bloodline of the Sterling family to ensure her own fraudulent pedigree could never be legally contested."

Before Clara could process the full terror of the revelation, Detective Vance’s radio crackled to life with a frantic dispatch call from the transport unit downstairs.
“Control to Unit Four! We have an emergency at the subterranean transport bay! Defendant Helen Sterling just collapsed during transfer—and the medical team says she’s exhibiting acute symptoms of rapid-onset heavy-metal poisoning!”
