Chapter 4 - The Safe House

The rain lashed against the windows of the unmarked police cruiser as it navigated the winding suburban roads away from the Sterling estate.
In the back seat, Clara sat in quiet exhaustion, resting her chin against the top of her sleeping baby’s head. The adrenaline that had sustained her through the confrontation in the dining room was rapidly fading, leaving behind a profound, bone-deep weariness. Yet, beneath the fatigue, a fierce, unbreakable strength pulsed through her veins. She had broken free. She had taken the evidence, protected her daughter, and watched her stepmother’s empire of vanity crumble.
The car slowed down, turning off the paved highway and pulling through the secure iron gates of a modest, secluded brick safe house managed by the county's family support division.
Detective Vance killed the engine and twisted around in his seat, looking back at Clara with a sympathetic smile. "We're here, Mrs. Sterling. You're safe now. The social services coordinator is waiting inside with a warm crib and a medical kit for the baby."
Clara exhaled a long, shaky breath, offering a tired, genuine smile. "Thank you, Detective. If you hadn't arrived when you did..."
"Don't thank me," Vance interrupted, unbuckling his seatbelt and opening the car door. "Thank the person who uploaded the backup file to our portal right before the dinner party started. They knew exactly what Helen was planning."
Clara frowned, stepping out of the car into the cool night air while holding her baby close. "Who uploaded it? I thought I was the only one who had the camera feed."
"That's the interesting part," Vance said, holding an umbrella over her head as they walked toward the safe house entrance. "The metadata trace points to an IP address registered in the guest house on your father's estate. Someone inside that house has been watching Helen just as closely as you have."
Clara stopped on the concrete steps, a cold shiver running down her spine. "Who?"
Before Vance could answer, the heavy wooden door of the safe house swung open from the inside, revealing a familiar, elegant woman holding a steaming cup of tea.

It was Clara’s estranged aunt, Eleanor—Helen’s sister—who had supposedly been banished from the family estate ten years ago for refusing to sign away her share of the family trust.
