Chapter 8 - The Judge's Dilemma

Judge Miller paused, his pen hovering a millimeter above the paper. He blinked in surprise, looking over his reading glasses down into the gallery.
Helen spun around so fast she nearly knocked over her water glass, her eyes narrowing with venomous fury when she saw Clara standing in the aisle, flanked by Detective Vance and Eleanor.
"What is she doing here?!" Helen shrieked, taking a step toward the gallery rail before her defense attorney yanked her back by the sleeve of her gray holding-cell jumpsuit. "This is a closed judicial proceeding! Have her removed from the courtroom immediately!"
"Silence in the courtroom, Mrs. Sterling," Judge Miller commanded, though a faint flicker of nervousness crossed his features as he recognized Eleanor standing beside Clara. "Who enters my court claiming standing in this matter?"
Eleanor stepped forward, placing a thick, stamped legal document onto the clerk's podium. "Eleanor Sterling-Vance, retired Chief District Magistrate. And acting legal trustee for the true estate holder, Clara Sterling."
Judge Miller frowned, looking down at the document. "This court is reviewing a standard bond waiver for financial disputes, Ms. Vance. Unless you have new primary evidence regarding the alleged child endangerment charge, your presence—"
"I have primary evidence regarding systemic estate fraud, identity suppression, and the forged death certificate of the primary trust owner dating back twenty-five years," Eleanor interrupted, her voice ringing with absolute authority. She slid the leather binder across the mahogany barrier. "Read page forty-two, Judge Miller. Specifically, Dr. Harrison Vance’s signed confession regarding the asset transfer of the Sterling estate."
Judge Miller picked up the binder, his eyes scanning the dense legal text. As he read further down the page, his professional composure vanished. The color drained from his face, and he slowly set the document down as if it were burning his fingers.
Helen’s defense attorney leaned over, whispering frantically, "Judge, this is completely irregular—a midnight motion cannot introduce historical probate files without prior discovery notice!"
"Mr. Vance’s affidavit carries federal priority jurisdiction under interstate fraud statutes," Judge Miller cut him off sharply, his voice dropping into a cold, uncompromising tone. He looked up, his gaze locking directly onto Helen. "Mrs. Sterling, your emergency bond petition is denied. Furthermore, I am issuing an immediate, unappealable freeze on all corporate accounts, real estate holdings, and trust funds associated with your name."

Helen let out a choked, breathless scream of rage, slamming her fists down on the defense table. "You can't do this! I built those accounts! That is my empire!"
