Chapter 3 - The Anonymous Tip

Detective Vance stepped into the foyer, his keen eyes instantly sweeping over Clara’s muddy boots, her bruised arm from an earlier scuffle with Helen, and the tiny infant wrapped securely in a clean wool blanket against her chest.

From behind Clara, the dining room doors swung wide open. Helen and Arthur rushed into the foyer, their expressions shifting instantaneously from blind panic to practiced, weeping concern.

"Oh, thank goodness the police are here!" Helen cried out, rushing forward with her hands clasped dramatically against her chest, tears welling in her eyes with theatrical speed. "Detective, you have to help us! My stepdaughter is suffering a severe postpartum mental break. She’s wandering the grounds hallucinating, she hid her own baby outside, and now she’s threatening us with edited digital recordings!"

Arthur stepped up beside his wife, nodding eagerly in agreement, his posture slumped with manufactured paternal sorrow. "It's true, Officer. We've tried to get her psychiatric help, but she refuses medication. She's a danger to herself and the child."

Detective Vance listened to their rehearsed performance without moving a muscle. When Helen finally paused for breath, the detective slowly pulled a small plastic evidence bag from his coat pocket and held it up.

Inside the bag was a familiar, high-capacity digital flash drive.

"Is this the edited digital recording you're referring to, Mrs. Sterling?" Detective Vance asked, his voice cutting like a razor.

Helen blinked, her theatrical tears drying up in an instant. "I... I don't know what that is."

"It was dropped into our department's secure whistleblower portal ten minutes ago," Vance continued calmly. He turned his gaze toward Clara, his expression softening slightly with professional respect. "Along with a full, unedited video file showing you dragging a six-week-old infant into an outdoor animal pen while hosting a dinner party."

Arthur staggered back a step, staring at Helen in sheer disbelief. "Helen... what did you do?"

"I did what had to be done for this family!" Helen shrieked, losing her temper completely as her web of lies disintegrated. She pointed a trembling finger at Clara. "That girl is a parasite! She doesn't belong in our world!"

"You're both coming down to the precinct for questioning," Detective Vance said, signaling the two uniformed officers behind him. "Obstruction of justice, child endangerment, and filing a false police report. Let's move."
