Chapter 10 - The Sovereign's Invitation

The tinted rear door of the limousine clicked open with a soft, pneumatic hiss. There was no driver in the front seat; the cabin glowed with a cool, monochromatic light, and a single silver envelope rested on the plush leather upholstery.
Arthur stood up, pulling Mia behind him instinctively, his hand reaching for the empty holster at his side before he remembered he had left his weapon back in the ruined penthouse.
"Don't touch it, Dad," Mia warned, her eyes locked on the open doorway of the vehicle.
Before either of them could move, a synthesized, crystal-clear voice emanated from the interior speakers of the limousine, projecting outward into the quiet alley.
"There is no need for dramatics, Arthur," the voice echoed, smooth, cultured, and carrying an unmistakable chilling authority that seemed to vibrate through the very pavement. "After all, family reunions should be celebrated, not contested."
Arthur’s jaw tightened, his teeth grinding together so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. "Show yourself, Julian. I know you're behind this."
A soft chuckle drifted from the speakers. "I've been standing right beside you all along, old friend. Or did you truly believe a corporate empire of this magnitude could be built by a simple country boy from the provinces?"
The limousine door swung wider, and a gloved hand reached out from the darkness, placing a familiar, heavy gold signet ring on the leather seat—a ring bearing the exact same crest that had been stamped on the fragments of Mia's destroyed necklace.
"Get in, Mia," the voice commanded gently, though with an inescapable weight of absolute power. "Or watch the rest of your father's world burn down to the foundation before sunrise."
Arthur lunged forward, blocking the doorway with his body, his eyes blazing with fury. "You touch her, and I swear to God I will tear this city apart brick by brick until there's nothing left of your syndicate!"
"You already tried that, Arthur," the voice replied calmly from the shadows of the unseen speaker. "And look where it led you. To a high school courtyard, watching your daughter get bullied by children while the real masters pulled the strings."
Mia looked past her father, staring into the dark interior of the limousine. A slow, terrifying smile touched the corners of her lips—not a smile of fear, but of a predator recognizing another apex hunter. Without a word of warning to her father, she stepped around him and reached out, picking up the heavy gold signet ring from the seat.
"I'll go," Mia said, her voice steady and chillingly calm as she slid the ring onto her finger.
"Mia, no!" Arthur grabbed her wrist, horror dawning in his eyes. "You don't know what you're doing!"
May you like
"I know exactly what I'm doing, Dad," Mia whispered, turning to look into his eyes with a look of absolute, unyielding resolve. "It's time to see what's really inside the vault."
She stepped into the limousine, and before Arthur could lurch forward to pull her back, the heavy door slammed shut with a final, echoing thud. The vehicle glided smoothly away into the foggy night, leaving Arthur standing alone in the dark alley as the first sirens of the municipal police department began to wail in the distance.
