Chapter 4 - Blood and Ledger

The air in the principal's office grew suffocating. Arthur Sterling stared at Elena, his knuckles turning white as he gripped his cane. The past—a decade of buried scandals, corporate warfare, and a bitter family betrayal—was suddenly crashing back into the present with terrifying force.

"You," Arthur said, his voice dropping to a low, lethal register. "You stole from my wife on her deathbed, and you had the audacity to crawl back out of the dirt?"

Elena laughed, a sharp, elegant sound that echoed off the institutional walls. "Stole? Arthur, please. I took what was rightfully mine before your obsession with 'humility' bankrupted our side of the family. And as for your precious daughter Mia..." Elena turned her gaze toward the door, where Mia’s empty bicycle still leaned against the bike rack outside. "...she has no idea what kind of monster her father really is."

"Shut your mouth," Arthur stepped forward, but his security guards instantly intercepted him, placing themselves between their employer and Elena.

"Don't touch me, Arthur," Elena warned, her smile fading into a mask of pure venom. "Your little corporate empire is built on glass. The Blackwood Syndicate isn't just auditing your European accounts—they've filed an injunction with the federal court. By tomorrow morning, the SEC is going to freeze every single asset under the Sterling name."

Richard Vance, who had been cowering moments before, suddenly found his footing. He stood up straight, adjusting his tie with a renewed sense of arrogant invincibility. "You heard her, Marcus. Tell your boss to pack his bags. Westridge High isn't expelling Sophia or Logan. In fact, Principal Bennett is going to issue a formal apology to my family for this entire disruption."

Principal Bennett, sweating profusely and looking like a man caught between two firing squads, opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out.

Sophia looked at Logan, a glimmer of hope returning to her eyes. "See? I told you. My uncle and aunt wouldn't let us lose."

Logan sneered, walking over to the window and looking down at the empty courtyard. "That old man thought he could intimidate us with a helicopter. He doesn't realize he just walked into a trap."

Marcus, however, did not look defeated. Instead, a strange, calm expression settled over his face as he typed a quick message into his phone. He looked up at Arthur, giving him a subtle, almost imperceptible nod.

"You think you've won because you bought some debt and filed an injunction, Elena?" Arthur asked, his voice suddenly terrifyingly calm. He stopped struggling against his guards and stood tall, a cold, predatory smile spreading across his face.

Elena frowned, a sudden flicker of unease crossing her eyes. "What are you talking about?"

"You spent ten years hiding behind offshore accounts and the Blackwood Syndicate, thinking you were the smartest person in the room," Arthur said, stepping closer to her. "You forgot one fundamental rule of high finance, Elena: a trap is only effective if the person stepping into it doesn't know it's there."

Marcus turned his tablet around, displaying a real-time transaction log to the room. "While you were busy buying up Sterling Global's debt, Mr. Sterling authorized a reverse-acquisition through a subsidiary you forgot existed, Mrs. Vance." Marcus tapped the screen. "Your offshore shell companies? They weren't bought by Blackwood. They were quietly acquired by a trust fund held exclusively in Mia Sterling's name."

The color drained entirely from Elena's face. She snatched the tablet from Marcus's hands, her eyes frantically scanning the corporate filings. "No... no, that's impossible! I checked the registry this morning!"

"You checked the public registry," Arthur corrected her softly. "You forgot about the private family trust. The one your sister—my late wife—set up before she passed away. Every dollar you embezzled, every asset you bought through those shell companies, legally belongs to Mia."

Elena staggered back, colliding with the bookshelf. "You... you set me up. You used your own daughter as bait."

"Mia chose to walk into this school because she wanted a normal life," Arthur said, his voice hardening into steel. "You and these miserable snobs chose to tear her down. You signed your own death warrants the moment you touched her necklace."

Before Elena could recover, heavy footsteps echoed down the hallway. The double doors of the office swung open wide, revealing four federal agents in dark tactical gear, badges gleaming in the fluorescent light.

"Elena Vance?" the lead agent called out, holding up an arrest warrant. "You're under arrest for securities fraud, money laundering, and corporate espionage."

As the cuffs clicked onto Elena’s wrists, Sophia let out a piercing scream, realizing that her family's protection had just evaporated into thin air. But before the agents could escort Elena out, a sudden, frantic alert blared from every smartphone in the room simultaneously—a national news flash detailing an even larger, more unimaginable crisis unfolding across the city.
