Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Machine

Richard pulled his phone out, his eyes darting across the screen. As he read the incoming message, the color drained completely from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse. He let out a breathless laugh, a sound born of sheer, manic disbelief.
"What is it, Richard?" Victoria snapped, grabbing his arm. "Sign the damn paper! We can fight them in court later!"
"We can't sign," Richard whispered, his voice shaking so badly the phone nearly slipped from his fingers. He looked up at Marcus, a sudden, desperate spark of hope returning to his eyes. "Tell your boss he’s too late. Sterling Global can call in my commercial loans all they want. It won’t matter."
Marcus frowned, his professional cool slipping for a fraction of a second. "Mr. Vance, unless you have a liquidity injection of fifty million dollars by midnight, your companies are legally dead."
"I don't need fifty million," Richard smiled grimly, turning the phone around to show the screen. "Look at who just bought out our debt portfolio through an offshore shell company. Look at who is currently auditing the Sterling Foundation's European subsidiary."
Marcus glanced at the screen, and for the first time since entering the room, the color entirely drained from his face. The name on the screen was not an ordinary competitor. It belonged to the Blackwood Syndicate—a notoriously ruthless global investment firm run by a man Arthur Sterling had spent the last decade trying to destroy in the corporate courts.
"The Blackwood group..." Marcus breathed out, slamming the folder shut. "That's impossible. They pulled out of the American commercial sector three years ago."
"They're back," Richard said, a triumphant, albeit terrified, smirk returning to his face. "And they didn't just buy my debt. They bought Logan’s school board seat, half the residential zoning in the North District, and..." Richard paused, swallowing hard. "...they just acquired a twenty-five percent voting block in Sterling Global itself."
The office door flew open again, crashing against the drywall with a thunderous bang. This time, it wasn't a local parent or a school administrator. It was Arthur Sterling himself, flanked by four armed private security agents, his breath coming in short, furious gasps.
"Marcus," Arthur barked, ignoring the Vances entirely. "Get on the secure line to Zurich. Our Swiss accounts are being systematically frozen."
"We know, Mr. Sterling," Marcus said grimly, holding up his tablet. "The Blackwood Syndicate is making their move. And they didn't do it alone."
Arthur froze, his eyes narrowing. "What do you mean?"
"They had inside access," Marcus said quietly. "Someone inside your own inner circle provided them with the cryptographic keys to your subsidiary ledger. Someone who knew exactly where your vulnerabilities were."
Arthur’s face twisted in sudden, dark realization. He slowly turned his head away from his lawyer, his terrifying gaze locking onto a figure standing quietly in the shadows of the hallway outside the open door—a figure who had been whispering to Principal Bennett just moments before the chaos began.
It was Elena Vance, Richard’s estranged sister—and Arthur Sterling’s former chief financial officer, who had supposedly vanished after embezzling millions from the Sterling family a decade ago.

Elena stepped into the light, wearing an expensive designer coat, a cold, knowing smile playing on her lips. "Hello, Arthur," she purred, stepping past the stunned crowd. "Did you really think a janitor's daughter could hide her true identity forever? You thought you could bury me in the past, but I built an empire of my own while you were busy playing king."
