Chapter 7 - The Breach in the Vault

The heavy steel doors of the penthouse elevator slid open with a sharp, metallic screech that shattered the silence of the room. There was no security guard, no welcoming staff—only a single, perfectly tailored leather briefcase resting on the floor of the cabin, ticking with a soft, steady red pulse.
"Get down!" Arthur roared, lunging forward with a speed that belied his age, shoving Mia behind the structural concrete pillar just as the briefcase emitted a sharp hiss.
Instead of an explosion, a dense, odorless cloud of cryogenic gas billowed out from the seams of the case, instantly frosting the surrounding hardwood floor and filling the air with a blinding white haze. Through the fog, heavy, booted footsteps echoed across the marble foyer.
"Dad, the panic room codes—" Mia started, coughing against the cold vapor.
"The system is locked," Arthur muttered, drawing a heavy-caliber firearm from a concealed holster beneath his suit jacket. His face was a mask of calculated, lethal intent. "They didn't hack the terminal from the outside, Mia. They've had a backdoor into this tower since the day it was built."
A tall figure stepped out of the swirling mist, wearing a sleek tactical coat and a polished titanium mask that distorted their voice into a metallic, genderless drone.
"Put the weapon down, Arthur," the figure said, their voice echoing unnaturally in the vast, open-plan penthouse. "You've played the grieving widower for ten years. It's time to return what doesn't belong to you."
Arthur raised his pistol, his aim rock-steady. "Step another inch closer, and I'll ensure your remains are scatter-analyzed across three continents. Who sent you? The Sovereign Cross?"
The masked intruder chuckled—a low, grating sound. "The Cross doesn't send messengers, Arthur. They send cleansers. And as for the girl..." The figure turned its featureless mask toward the pillar where Mia was hiding. "...she was never a Sterling. She was just the bait we used to test your defenses."
Mia didn't cower. She slid out from behind the pillar, her hand firmly gripping a heavy brass candlestick she had quietly lifted from the side table. "If I'm bait, you should have brought a bigger hook."
Before the intruder could react, Mia swung the heavy brass artifact with all her strength, catching the figure squarely across the titanium mask with a deafening clang. The impact sent the intruder staggering backward, dislodging the mask just enough to reveal a jagged, distinctive scar running down the left side of their jawline.
Arthur’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief as he recognized the face. "Marcus?" he whispered, lowering his gun by a fraction of an inch. "My own lawyer? My closest confidant?"
Marcus wiped a trickle of blood from his chin, his professional veneer completely stripped away, leaving only a cold, predatory sneer. He reached up, tearing the damaged mask off entirely and tossing it onto the floor.
"Surprise, Arthur," Marcus smiled, his voice normal now, smooth and dripping with venom. "Did you really think a mid-level corporate lawyer could orchestrate a global hostile takeover all by himself? I wasn't working for the Vances. I was managing your portfolio's liquidation from the inside out."
Marcus raised his own hand, pressing a small detonator button on his wristwatch. "And as for the penthouse... well, let's just say your security system makes for a wonderful self-destruct mechanism."

The smart-glass windows lining the entire western wall of the penthouse suddenly fractured into a million spiderweb cracks, bowing outward under the pressure of an impending external blast.
