Chapter 6 - The Shadow on the Screen

The penthouse went dead silent, save for the low, rhythmic hum of the building's climate control system. Arthur stared at the small piece of plastic resting between his daughter's fingers, his breath catching in his throat. For all his billions, for all the federal indictments he had orchestrated and the skyscrapers he had leveled, a cold, unfamiliar dread coiled around his ribs.

"Where did you get that, Mia?" Arthur's voice dropped to a taut whisper.

"Logan dropped it when he panicked in the principal's office," Mia replied, her voice eerily calm as she stepped toward the sleek mahogany console near the window. "He thought he was being smart, trying to hide his tracks. But he didn't realize my bike wasn't the only thing he underestimated."

Without waiting for permission, Mia slid the flash drive into the secure terminal built into the desk. The screen flickered, bypassing the tower's commercial firewall with a series of clean, silent keystrokes that made Arthur's eyebrows shoot up. He had taught her how to protect herself, but he had never imagined she possessed this level of tactical digital evasion.

A single encrypted file materialized on the high-definition monitor: PROJECT_JANUS_ACCESS_LOGS.

"Mia, step away from that," Arthur said, his protective instincts flaring as he took a half-step forward. "If that drive is encrypted by a third party, it could be a trap. A remote payload designed to compromise our entire network."

"It's not a trap, Dad. It's an invitation," Mia said, clicking the file open.

A wall of text flooded the screen, followed by a live, encrypted video stream pinging from a secure server located three thousand miles away in Zurich—the very same financial hub Arthur had been trying to protect. But the names scrolling across the authentication logs weren't the Vances, and they weren't the Blackwood Syndicate.

They belonged to the Sovereign Cross—a shadowy coalition of international conglomerates that even Arthur’s intelligence network had long dismissed as an urban legend among global elites.

"Look at the timestamp," Mia pointed a slender finger at the corner of the monitor. "This communication was established twenty minutes before the helicopter even landed at Westridge High. Logan wasn't just a spoiled bully riding his parents' coattails. He was being used as a wedge."

Arthur leaned over the desk, his eyes narrowing as he read the decrypted chat transcript flashing on the screen.

> [Sovereign_04]: The girl has the necklace. Once the asset is compromised, trigger Protocol Meridian. Sterling will overreact as expected.

> [Logan_V]: Got it. My uncle's distraction will keep his legal team tied up while your people sweep the European ledger.

> [Sovereign_04]: Good. The 'janitor's daughter' act has served its purpose. Bring the necklace to the dock warehouse at midnight. The board wants its true heir back.

The room seemed to spin on its axis. Arthur straightened up, his face losing all color. He looked down at his daughter, his mind racing through a decade of agonizing memories.

"True heir..." Arthur choked out, his hand gripping the edge of the desk so hard his knuckles turned translucent. "No. That's impossible. Your mother... your mother and I—"

"My mother didn't die in that car crash ten years ago, did she, Dad?" Mia turned to face him, her eyes shining with unshed tears that held more fury than sorrow. "Or at least... that's not what these files are saying."

Before Arthur could answer, the secure terminal screen flashed red, cutting off the text with a glaring warning message: TRACE DETECTED. REMOTE WIPE INITIATED.

The monitor went completely black, reflecting only their pale, shocked faces in the darkening glass as the elevator chime pinged once more—not to announce an arrival, but to indicate that the penthouse security lockdown had just been overridden from the outside.
