Chapter 11 - The Man in the Sedan

The cold night air hit my skin like a bucket of ice water, but my pulse was racing so fast I barely felt the chill. I stood at the end of the front walkway, the heavy metal weight of the hard drive pressed tightly against my palm.

Inside the house, my three babies were asleep. That single thought kept my spine rigid, kept my knees from buckling beneath the exhaustion that had lived in my bones ever since the emergency C-section three weeks ago. Scott had called me weak. He had laughed when I bled through my clothes, threw adult diapers at my face, and called me disgusting for breaking down after carrying his triplets. He thought I was still that broken, weeping woman trapped on the bathroom floor.

He had no idea who I had become.

The driver’s side door of the dark sedan swung fully open. A polished leather oxford stepped down onto the asphalt, followed by an expensive wool overcoat. The man who straightened up under the streetlamp wasn’t a hired thug, and he wasn’t Scott.

It was Arthur Vance.

Arthur Vance was Scott’s former mentor and senior partner at Apex Ventures—a man Scott spoke of with reverent awe during our marriage, treating him like an untouchable titan of commercial real estate. Arthur had attended our quiet wedding two years ago, shaking my hand with a smile that had never quite reached his cold, calculating eyes.

"Lauren," Arthur said, his voice smooth, low, and entirely devoid of surprise. "You shouldn't be out in the cold without a coat. Especially not in your condition."

"Cut the paternal act, Arthur," I said, keeping my distance, standing directly under the floodlight of my driveway so every movement was illuminated. "You're the silent partner Brandon found on the Oakridge paperwork. You helped Scott liquidate Elena’s trust."

Arthur looked at me for a long moment, then gave a faint, chilling chuckle. He leaned against the roof of the idling sedan, folding his arms.

"Scott is a fool," Arthur remarked casually. "He always was. Arrogant, sloppy, and entirely driven by his petty ego. I told him months ago that pushing you to the brink while hiding millions in offshore shell companies was reckless. A content wife asks no questions. A humiliated wife looks for leverage."

"Leverage?" I took half a step forward, raising the hard drive just enough for him to see it glinting under the streetlamp. "This isn't leverage, Arthur. This is evidence. Bank fraud, tax evasion, and grand larceny. And whatever you two did to Elena before she vanished."

Arthur’s casual posture tightened. The smug amusement vanished from his face, replaced by a razor-sharp stillness.

"Careful, Lauren," he murmured. "You think you're holding a winning hand because you found a few encrypted spreadsheets and an old storage locker in Unit 412. But you don't understand the scope of what Scott dragged you into. Scott didn't just steal Elena's money. He borrowed against debts that weren't his to touch."

"And you let him?"

"I financed him," Arthur corrected softly. "Until tonight. You see, Lauren, Scott didn't send me here to intimidate you. Scott thinks I'm downtown right now, waiting to receive whatever you bring him. But I don't work for your husband. And if you hand that drive over to him, he’s going to board a private flight out of county jurisdiction by dawn, leaving you with three infants, an empty bank account, and a mountain of civil liabilities in your name."

My breath caught in my throat. "My name?"

"Did you really think the second mortgage on this house was just for house renovations?" Arthur took a slow step toward me, reaching into his interior pocket.

Instinct made me flinch, but Arthur didn't pull a weapon. He drew out a manila folder and tossed it onto the hood of his car.

"Scott forged your signature as the primary guarantor on the Oakridge redevelopment bond three weeks before you delivered," Arthur said, his eyes drilling into mine. "If Apex goes under tomorrow morning when the banks open, the state won't go after Scott in hiding. They will come for you. They will seize this house, and Child Protective Services will question how a bankrupt, medically compromised mother can provide for triplets."

The world tilted beneath my feet. Scott’s cruelest betrayal wasn’t just walking out or hiding his wealth—he had orchestrated a trap that would destroy me and our children the second he took flight.

"Why are you telling me this?" I demanded, my knuckles white against the hard drive. "What do you want?"

Arthur’s gaze locked onto the drive in my hand. "I want Scott erased from the company. And you want your children protected. I have the power to void that personal guarantee before the county recorder's office opens at eight. But I need what's on that drive to lock Scott out before he reaches the tarmac."

My phone vibrated violently in my coat pocket. I pulled it out with one hand, keeping my eyes fixed on Arthur.
