Chapter 40 - The Shadow in the Mirror

Dawn broke over Philadelphia in pale shades of rose and slate grey.

The cottage was quiet. The rain had finally stopped, leaving the morning air crisp, clean, and smelling of damp earth.

In the nursery, the floorboard was back in place, covered once more by the braided rug. I sat in the maple rocking chair, cradling Liam against my chest while Maya and Noah slept peacefully in their cribs.

Marcus was downstairs with federal prosecutors, finalizing the protective immunity paperwork for his daughter’s medical trust. Victor Sterling was sitting in a federal holding cell without bail, his empire completely dismantled across three continents. Scott was facing thirty years in a federal penitentiary for fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy.

I had won.

My children were safe. The Vance-Apex liabilities were vacated by federal decree, and the whistleblower trust had already deposited the first installment into a secured account that would ensure my babies would never want for anything for the rest of their lives.

I looked at my reflection in the nursery window. The dark circles under my eyes were still there, the marks of childbirth still etched into my body. But the broken, humiliated woman who had wept on this floor while her husband ridiculed her diapers was gone. In her place was someone forged in fire.

A soft knock came at the front door.

I laid Liam gently in his crib, tucked the blanket around his tiny shoulders, and walked downstairs.

Marcus was standing in the open doorway, holding an official courier package sealed with red wax. He looked tired, but for the first time since I met him, the weight of the world was off his shoulders.

"The federal marshals finished inventorying Scott's personal safe at the Apex headquarters," Marcus said, his voice subdued. "They found this in a hidden compartment behind his desk. It was addressed to you, Lauren. But it wasn't written by Scott."

I took the envelope. It was heavy, made of vintage parchment, and bore an old wax seal that I recognized immediately from my childhood home: the crest of the Vance family trust.

"What is this?" I asked, a sudden chill creeping back into my spine.

"The FBI agent in charge told me Scott didn't find the Vance-Apex charter on his own," Marcus whispered, stepping closer. "Someone gave it to him four years ago. Someone who orchestrated your entire marriage, Scott’s rise, and his fall—from the very beginning."

With trembling fingers, I broke the wax seal and slid out the single piece of paper inside.

It was a handwritten codicil to my grandfather's original will, dated twenty-four years ago. And at the bottom, written in familiar, elegant handwriting, was a line that stopped my heart:

*To my beloved granddaughter, Lauren: If you have conquered Victor Sterling, you have proven yourself worthy to claim the true family estate. But beware the fourth child—the one Scott hid from you before the triplets were born.*

My hands dropped to my sides.

I looked up at Marcus, my breath catching in my throat, as the quiet suburban morning suddenly shattered into terrifying, unanswered darkness once again.
