Chapter 15 - The Cold Reality

Scott didn't move. He stood frozen on the second step of the stairs, staring at Detective Miller’s badge as if waiting for someone to wake him up from a nightmare.
"You can't arrest me," Scott muttered, his voice trembling now. "This is an administrative audit at best. My lawyers will have an injunction by morning. You have no direct proof of intent."
"We don't need an administrative audit, Scott," Detective Miller said calmly, walking up the metal steps. "We have the original signed transfer authorization from Elena Vance's trust account, dated three days before she boarded a flight to Zurich. And on the back of the physical ledger recovered from your storage locker, we found Elena’s handwritten addendum detailing how you threatened to publicly leak her private medical files if she didn't sign."
Scott’s eyes bulged. "She... she kept that?"
"She left it behind for someone to find," I said. "She just didn't expect it to take two years."
Miller grabbed Scott’s left wrist, twisting it behind his back with practiced efficiency. The metallic click of the first cuff echoed across the empty tarmac.
"Lauren! Stop this!" Scott shouted, writhing against the officer’s grip as the second cuff clicked into place. "Think about your children! If I go to prison, my name is disgraced! They’ll grow up with a felon for a father! You’ll never get a corporate settlement out of Apex! We’ll be ruined!"
"My children don't need your name, Scott," I said, looking him dead in the eye. "And as of midnight tonight, they don't need your money either."
Miller led Scott down the metal stairs. As they passed me, Scott tried to stop, leaning toward me, his face twisted in desperation.
"Lauren, please. Look at me. We can fix this. You can drop the complaint with the county prosecutor. I'll give you full legal custody. I'll sign the house over to you right now, no questions asked! Just let me board this plane!"
"The house is already mine," I said quietly. "Arthur Vance had the forged second mortgage voided thirty minutes ago in an attempt to save himself from federal fraud charges. The house is completely unencumbered. And your shares in Apex? The state tax division froze them ten minutes ago."
Scott stared at me, the final realization hitting him: every single exit route he had spent months preparing had been blocked. He had built a labyrinth to trap me in helplessness, but the walls had closed in on him instead.
"You ruined my life," Scott hissed, his voice dropping into pure hatred as Miller pushed him toward the back of the squad car. "You were nothing before I married you! A quiet, meek nobody!"
"And you were an empty suit who stole from women because you couldn't build anything of your own," I replied.
The cruiser door slammed shut, cutting off Scott’s voice.
Brandon walked up beside me, watching the red taillights of the cruiser as it began to taxi toward the airfield gates. The wind blew cold across the concrete, but for the first time in nine months, I could breathe without feeling like my chest was going to cave in.
"It’s over," Brandon said softly.
"Not quite," I answered, turning to look at the dark corporate jet still idling on the runway. "The pilot didn't shut down the engines."
Brandon frowned, looking toward the cockpit. "Why would he keep them running? Scott is in custody."
Before either of us could move, the pilot’s cabin door opened. A woman stepped out onto the upper platform of the stairs.
She wasn't dressed in a flight uniform. She was wearing a simple dark trench coat, her blonde hair tied back, holding a small leather briefcase in her hand.

She walked slowly down the stairs, her boots clicking against the metal rungs. When she reached the bottom step, she stopped, looking straight at me with eyes that matched the missing-person posters from Oakridge.
Elena Vance had never been in Zurich.
