Chapter 19 - Stripping the Armor

At three o'clock in the morning, the corporate offices of Apex Ventures in downtown Oakridge were pitch black, save for the single floor-to-ceiling window on the eighth floor.

Brandon’s keycard, which Scott had forgotten to deactivate three weeks ago, buzzed against the electronic scanner. The heavy glass doors clicked unlocked.

Elena walked in first, her heels silent on the plush carpet. I followed directly behind her, holding the dissolution papers in one hand and the blue insurance policy in the other.

The office smelled of stale coffee, expensive leather, and the lingering trace of Scott’s cologne. On his mahogany desk sat a framed photograph: not of me, not of our babies, but of Scott standing on the deck of a chartered yacht, smiling smugly into the camera.

Elena didn't hesitate. She swept her arm across the desk, sending the glass frame crashing onto the hardwood floor, the glass shattering into a thousand jagged pieces.

"Sit," Elena said, pulling out the leather executive chair behind the desk and motioning for me to take it.

"This is your company now, Elena," I said.

"Apex was built on my mother’s blood and your suffering, Lauren," Elena replied, leaning over the terminal and typing in the administrative master bypass code she had memorized years ago. "We share the execution."

The dual monitors flared to life. Rows of financial accounts, live escrow feeds, and corporate retainers illuminated the dark office.

Brandon stood near the door, monitoring the police scanner on his phone. "Miller just booked Scott into county lockup. His one phone call went to Arthur Vance’s private line. Obviously, nobody answered."

"He’ll call the corporate legal firm next," Elena said, her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard. "Sterling & Croft. They have a two-million-dollar automatic retainer agreement with Apex to represent executive officers in case of criminal indictment."

She brought up the retainer management screen. The cursor blinked over a red button labeled: *REVOKE CORPORATE INDEMNIFICATION*.

"If I click this," Elena said, turning her head to look at me, "Apex officially declares Scott Mercer's actions as ultra vires—outside the scope of corporate duty. The firm withdraws all legal representation. He gets assigned a county public defender."

"Do it," I said without a second of hesitation.

Elena pressed the key.

A confirmation window flashed green: *RETAINER TERMINATED. FUNDS REVERTED TO SURPLUS TRUST.*

"Next," I said, leaning over the screen. "The domestic escrow account. The one he used to hold the deed to our home."

Elena clicked through the secondary ledger. "Here it is. Scott locked it under a dual-key security code. He holds one key, Arthur holds the other."

"Arthur's power of attorney is dead," Brandon reminded us from the door. "And Elena holds the master trustee key."

"Which means," Elena said, looking up at me, "I can reassign the deed right now to a single owner, debt-free, with zero secondary liens."

She typed in her mother’s maiden security code, entered the property parcel number for my home, and hit enter.

The screen refreshed.

*OWNER OF RECORD: LAUREN MERCER. STATUS: UNENCUMBERED ALLODIAL TITLE.*

A tear finally broke free, rolling down my cheek, but it wasn't a tear of sorrow. It was the weight of an entire world being lifted off my back.

He couldn't take my home. He couldn't force me onto the street. He couldn't take my children.

"There's one more thing," Elena murmured, her eyes narrowing as she scrolled to the bottom of the financial summary.

"What is it?" I asked.

"There’s an automated wire scheduled for 6:00 AM," Elena said, pointing at the monitor. "Two point four million dollars. Directed to an offshore trust named *St. Jude Private Medical Services* in Zurich."

Brandon walked over, squinting at the screen. "St. Jude? That’s not a shell company. That’s a private Swiss hospice clinic."

"Why would Scott be wiring two million dollars to a clinic in Switzerland?" I asked, my blood running cold again.

Elena clicked on the beneficiary details.

A scanned medical chart appeared on the screen, accompanied by an identification photograph taken six months ago.

The woman in the photo had soft brown hair, tired eyes, and a small birthmark right below her left collarbone.

Beside the photo was a name that made Brandon gasp and take an involuntary step backward.

*PATIENT NAME: ELEANOR MERCER. RELATION: SISTER.*
