Chapter 48 - The Dissolution

By Friday afternoon, the legal fortress Scott Hastings and Victor Sterling had spent a decade building had turned to dust.

In the mahogany conference room of the Vance Trust headquarters in Manhattan, the court-appointed federal receiver signed the final dissolution order. Every corporate shell company linked to Apex was stripped of its claims. Every asset Arthur Vance had originally willed to his bloodline was transferred directly and unconditionally into a clean, irrevocable trust under my sole name.

Marcus sat beside me, closing the last of the thick black binders.

"It’s done, Lauren," he said, setting down his silver pen. "The offshore trusts are liquidated. The accounts are transferred to a private wealth management firm under your personal oversight. Victor Sterling’s syndicate has officially forfeited all claims to the Vance estate."

I looked out the panoramic window overlooking Central Park. The trees were painted in vibrant hues of gold and crimson beneath the autumn sun.

"What about Donald Vance-Keller?" I asked.

"He pled guilty to wire fraud and conspiracy an hour ago," Marcus replied. "His law license is revoked. He’s looking at seven to ten years at Fort Dix."

"And Scott?"

Marcus paused, his expression softening. "Scott’s public defender requested a psychiatric evaluation this morning. He’s completely unraveled. With the protective order in place, he will never see the triplets, and he will never see Clara again. When his sentence is handed down, he will serve at least twenty-five years in federal prison."

I let out a slow, deep breath. For months, fear had been my shadow. Every time Liam cried, every time I changed a diaper, every time I felt the lingering physical pain of the surgery, Scott’s cruel words had echoed in the back of my mind, telling me I was worthless, inadequate, and ruined.

Now, those words were nothing more than static from a dead transmission.

"Marcus," I said, turning to look at him. "Thank you. For everything. When Scott turned on me, you were the only person who looked at me and saw someone worth fighting for."

Marcus held my gaze, his hazel eyes clear and sincere. "I didn't fight for you because Scott turned on you, Lauren. I fought for you because you never stopped fighting for your children. Even when you were at your lowest point, you were stronger than Scott could ever dream of being."

A quiet knock at the conference room door interrupted us.

The door opened, and Clara walked in, holding a small paper cup of hot chocolate. She wore a dark blue corduroy dress and clean white sneakers. Her portable oxygen tank was tucked into a small, stylish backpack she carried on her shoulders, humming so quietly you could barely hear it.

Behind her, Mrs. Gable pushed the triple stroller, where Liam, Noah, and Maya were sleeping peacefully beneath their fleece blankets.

"Mommy?" Clara called out, her eyes lighting up when she saw me. "The man in the lobby gave me two marshmallows!"

"Two whole marshmallows?" I laughed, kneeling down on the Persian rug and opening my arms.

Clara ran straight toward me, throwing her small arms around my neck and burying her face against my shoulder. The faint scent of lavender soap and clean rain washed over me, anchoring my heart in a way money, trusts, and legal victories never could.

"Are we going home now?" she whispered against my neck.

"Yes, my love," I murmured, kissing her soft hair. "We're going home."
