Chapter 1 - The Rewind

The faint amber glow of the tiny camera lens pulsed in the upper corner of the white hospital room, a silent witness to a reality that Marcus had nearly missed in his blind fury. For a heartbeat, the only sound in the sterile suite was the ragged, shallow intake of breath coming from Khloe where she lay curled on the marble floor. Her fingers remained locked in a desperate, protective shield over her seven-month pregnant belly, her knuckles stark white against the dark veins of her skin. The shock of the fall, combined with the sharp, acidic sting of adrenaline and terror, had left her vocal cords paralyzed. She could not scream, could not shout out the truth, and could not demand that Marcus look away from the woman who had just tried to snuff out their future.

Marcus stood frozen, his hand still stinging from the force of the backhand blow he had delivered to Isabella’s cheek. The crimson imprint of his palm stood out in brutal contrast against her pale skin, a visual testament to a sudden, savage rage he rarely let surface. But his eyes were no longer locked on Isabella. They had drifted upward, magnetically pulled by the sudden, absolute terror that had drained every ounce of color from Isabella’s face. The defiant, manipulative sneer she usually wore like armor had completely fractured, replaced by a look of primal panic.

"Marcus," Isabella whispered, her voice cracking with a raw, ugly desperation that sounded nothing like the polished socialite she pretended to be. She took a slow, trembling step backward, her designer heel clicking sharply against the cold floor. "Marcus, don't look at that. It's... it's not what you think. The hospital systems, they glitch all the time. Someone could have hacked it, or—"

"Shut up," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a register so low and devoid of warmth that it made the air in the room feel instantly heavy.

He didn't yell. That was what terrified Isabella the most. When Marcus raised his voice, it meant he was angry; when he spoke in that flat, dead tone, it meant he was calculating. And Marcus Vance was a man whose calculations usually ended in total, unyielding destruction. He was the majority shareholder of Vance Pharmaceuticals, a titan of corporate real estate and private equity, a man who built his entire empire on digging up liabilities and burying them ten feet deep.

Without breaking eye contact with the tiny blinking red light, Marcus slowly backed up until his shoulder hit the wall beside the door frame. His hand reached up, his long fingers finding the master control panel for the private VIP suite. With a firm press of a button, he locked the heavy wooden door from the inside. The heavy click of the deadbolt sliding into place echoed through the room like a gunshot.

Khloe flinched at the sound, her back pressed hard against the base of the bedside table where the IV pole rattled dangerously. "Marcus..." she gasped out, her voice barely a dry rasp. "My... my back. I think..."

The sound of her voice seemed to snap Marcus out of his trance. The icy detachment shattered, replaced by a terrifying wave of protective panic. He dropped to his knees beside his wife instantly, his large hands hovering over her body as if he were afraid that touching her wrong might shatter her completely.

"Khloe. Baby, look at me. Stay still. Don't move an inch," Marcus pleaded, his voice cracking as he surveyed the cold marble beneath her. He shrugged off his heavy wool suit jacket in a frantic motion and carefully slid it underneath her head, his hands trembling violently. "I'm calling Dr. Vance. I'm calling security. God damn it, Khloe, why is she even in this room?"

"She... she wouldn't leave," Khloe whimpered, tears finally spilling over her lashes and cutting tracks through the dust on her cheeks. "She said you wanted her here. She said... she said you sent her to check on the legal paperwork for the transfer."

Marcus’s head snapped up, his gaze fixing on Isabella with such intense malice that she actually whimpered and retreated another step until her back hit the locked door. The sheer venom in his eyes could have melted steel.

"Transfer?" Marcus growled, standing up slowly to his full, imposing height. He stepped between Isabella and his wife like a protective wall. "What transfer, Isabella? What the hell are you talking about?"

Isabella’s chest heaved beneath her silk blouse. She swallowed hard, her tongue darting out to wet her dry lips. She knew she was cornered. The camera wasn't just a motion sensor; it was a high-definition pan-tilt unit connected directly to the hospital’s central administrative server, installed specifically for high-profile VIP patients like Khloe Vance. It didn't just record the last thirty seconds; it saved everything in real-time to an encrypted cloud database.

"Marcus, listen to me," Isabella began, trying to put on a mask of calm calculation, though her hands were shaking so badly she had to hide them behind her back. "Your father... your father knew about the baby's legal status. He’s the one who wanted the family trust audited before the birth. I was just... I was just trying to help you secure the estate assets so that—"

"You were trying to secure my estate by crushing my unborn child’s skull against the marble?" Marcus interrupted, his voice dangerously soft as he took a slow, deliberate step toward her.

"She tripped!" Isabella shrieked, the thin veneer of her composure finally tearing completely away. She pointed a trembling finger at Khloe, her face contorting into a mask of pure, unadulterated hatred. "She’s a fraud, Marcus! She planned this from the very beginning! She’s been faking the complications, faking the bed rest, just to trap you into a billion-dollar inheritance! Look at her! She’s not even bleeding! She’s milking this for all it’s worth!"

Marcus didn't yell this time. He didn't even blink. He reached out with terrifying speed, grabbed Isabella by the collar of her expensive silk blouse, and slammed her backward against the locked wooden door with a dull, echoing thud. The breath left Isabella’s lungs in a violent wheeze, her eyes bulging as Marcus’s forearm pressed hard against her windpipe.

"You listen to me, you toxic, manipulative bitch," Marcus whispered, his face inches from hers, his breath hot and ragged with rage. "You are going to unlock that door, you are going to walk down to the security basement, and you are going to sit down and watch every single second of that footage with the chief of security. And if there is one frame—one single microsecond—where I see you touch my wife or my unborn child with malicious intent... I will personally ensure that you never practice law, step foot in this city, or draw a free breath outside of a maximum-security prison ever again. Do you understand me?"

Isabella clawed at his wrists, her face turning a mottled shade of purple as the oxygen supply cut off. She couldn't speak, but her eyes screamed a frantic, desperate plea.

Behind them, on the cold floor, Khloe let out a low, agonizing moan as a fresh wave of sharp, cramping pain tore through her lower abdomen. A dark stain began to slowly spread across the hem of her hospital gown, blooming against the white fabric like a spreading pool of ink.

Marcus heard the sound. He dropped Isabella instantly, letting her slump to the floor in a coughing, gasping heap, and spun around.

"Khloe!" Marcus screamed, falling back to his knees as he saw the blood. "Nurse! Code blue! Someone get in here right now!"
