Chapter 6 - The Silence of the Estate

The massive wrought-iron gates of the Vance estate swung open with a heavy, mechanical groan, letting Marcus’s black Mercedes glide up the sweeping gravel driveway. For thirty years, the sprawling Connecticut mansion had symbolized unassailable power, an impenetrable fortress of wealth that stood entirely immune to the chaos of the outside world. Tonight, it felt less like a home and more like a mausoleum.

Inside the grand foyer, the crystal chandelier cast a cold, fractured light over the checkerboard marble floor. There was no fire crackling in the hearth, no staff scurrying to take Marcus’s coat. Only an oppressive, suffocating silence that seemed to press down on his chest with the weight of a lead shield.

Khloe was upstairs in the master suite, though "master suite" felt like a cruel mockery now. She hadn't left the bed in three days—not since she had been discharged from the hospital under strict medical observation, her body battered and her soul completely hollowed out.

Marcus climbed the grand staircase, his footsteps echoing hollowly against the hardwood. When he reached the heavy mahogany double doors of their bedroom, he paused, his hand hovering over the gold-plated handle. He could hear the faint, erratic sound of a television playing downstairs in the sitting room, but up here, there was only a terrifying void.

He pushed the door open.

Khloe was sitting propped up against a mountain of down pillows, staring blankly out the floor-to-ceiling windows toward the darkened expanse of the estate gardens. She wore an oversized charcoal sweater that hung loosely off her frail shoulders, making her look like a ghost haunting her own life. The soft glow of the moon caught the pale, drawn lines of her face, highlighting the dark circles bruised beneath her eyes.

"Khloe," Marcus said softly, his voice cracking slightly as he stepped into the room. He closed the door quietly behind him, as if afraid that a sudden noise might shatter whatever fragile thread kept her anchored to reality.

She didn't turn her head. Her gaze remained fixed on the glass where her own reflection stared back at her like a stranger. "Did you take care of it?" she asked, her voice flat, devoid of the warmth or the fire that had once defined her.

Marcus stopped a few feet from the bed, his hands clenching into tight fists at his sides. "Isabella’s arraignment was this morning. The federal judge denied bail. She’s being held at the federal detention center downtown without the possibility of release pending trial."

"Good," Khloe whispered simply. There was no triumph in her tone, no satisfaction. Just an empty, gray resignation.

Marcus walked closer, carefully sitting down on the edge of the mattress. He reached out, his long fingers trembling as he tried to brush a stray lock of hair away from her cheek.

The moment his skin touched hers, Khloe flinched violently, pulling away as if his hand were carrying a live electric current. She turned her head then, her eyes locking onto his with a flash of raw, unfiltered agony that cut him deeper than any knife.

"Don't," she breathed, her lips trembling. "Don't touch me, Marcus."

"Khloe, please," Marcus pleaded, his voice breaking as a tear finally spilled over his lashes, cutting a wet trail down his stubbled cheek. "Let me help you. Let me try to—"

"Try to what?" Khloe interrupted, her voice rising in a sharp, hysterical crescendo that made the monitors or whatever was left of her medical equipment seem to hum in agreement. "Try to fix it with money? Try to bury this under another corporate merger or another legal defense fund? You built an empire on secrets, Marcus. You invited monsters like Isabella into our inner circle because she was useful to your bottom line. And our daughter paid the price for your ambition."

The words struck Marcus like a physical blow. He staggered backward off the bed, stumbling slightly before catching himself against the carved wooden post of the canopy. He couldn't defend himself. Every single accusation she hurled at him was an undeniable truth. He had been so blind, so obsessed with protecting the Vance name and corporate assets that he had completely failed to see the viper nesting right beside them.

"You're right," Marcus whispered hoarsely, his head dropping into his hands. "It’s my fault. Everything that happened... it’s on my hands."

"Then leave," Khloe said, her voice dropping back into that terrifying, deadened whisper as she turned her face back toward the dark window. "Just leave me alone, Marcus. Go downstairs, check your stock tickers, talk to your mother about the estate trust. Just leave me in this room where I don't have to look at the man who let our baby die."

Marcus stood frozen in the center of the dark room for a long, agonizing moment. He wanted to argue, to beg, to pull her into his arms and promise her the moon. But looking at her fragile, broken frame, he realized the cruelest reality of all: his presence wasn't a comfort anymore. It was a living, breathing reminder of the nightmare that had destroyed them.

Without another word, Marcus turned, walked out into the cold hallway, and locked the bedroom door from the outside.
